Comic Harold Lloyd's Son Dies at 40 Harold Lloyd son of the late silent film comedian, died early Wednesday in a North Hollywood sanitarium. He was 40. The cause of his death was not disclosed, but a family member told The Times he had been ill "off and on" for the last two years. Funeral services are pending. The child of famous parents (his mother was silent movie actress Mildred Davis), he tried to carve a film career for himself and emulated his father in his acting debut in a 1949 picture, "Our Very Own." Career Interrupted His professional career was postponed by a fouryear stint in the Air Force during which he made 13 motion pictures for military use.

Out of the service, he tried again in the mid1950s for a film career and starred in a British made picture, "Yank in Ermine." He made a number of acting appearances in television shows, including "Father Knows Best," and as a guest on panel and variety shows. Under the name Duke Lloyd he enjoyed several years as a successful nightclub entertainer and singer. Incapacitated in '65 But he never found the magic passport to stardom with a public that had been more interested in his premature birth and perilous first months of life in 1931 than in his later career. In 1965 he was hospitalized with a ruptured blood vessel in his head. He did not work again, a family member said Wed- nesday.

He leaves two sisters, Gloria Guasti of Santa Monica and Peggy Lloyd Patten of Sherman Oaks. Harold Lloyd Sr. died last March. Donald Roth; Memory Man David M. Roth, 97, regarded as the world's foremost memory expert for more than four decades, died Wednesday in Los Angeles Convalescent Hospital.

Mr. Roth, a Los Angeles resident for 51 years, was the author of "The Famous Roth Memory Course" and "How to Remember Names and Faces." Old age did not dim Mr. Roth's memory. He kept his mind sharp in recent years of studying the English language and mathematics. After he turned 97 last October, he was still able to cite the day of the week for any date from 1752 to 3000 and repeat the telephone numbers of any of the 600 members of his Rotary Club chapter.

For good measure, he could recite Thomas Gray's 128-line "Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard." Mr. Roth leaves a daughter, Mrs. Thomas McEachen of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Adeline Stern of Valley City, N.D., and three grandchildren. Private funeral services will be conducted under arrangements by Pierce- Hamrock Mortuary.

Ben Pollack Rites Today Funeral services for Dixieland jazz drummer and orchestra leader Ben Pollack will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Hollywood Cemetery Chapel. Mr. Pollack, 67, whose band in the 30s and 40s included such notables as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Harry James was found dead Monday, an apparent suicide.
