MOVIE REVIEW 'Priest's Wife' at Loew's Saddler Named Choreographer of 'Knickerbocker' Donald Saddler, choreographer for the current New York hit "No, No, Nanette," has been set to create the choreography for the Civic Light Opera's new production of "Knickerbocker Holiday," to star Burt Lancaster in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of The Music Center beginning June 20. Saddler will be in Los Angeles Thursday to audition male dancers at 11 a.m. and female dancers at noon at the Pavilion. "Knickerbocker 11-day" will open in San Francisco's Curran Theater May 11 before its engagement here in June. Katharine Hepburn stars in "Coco" to open the season here April 27.

And I don't care what else is around, this one will be hard to beat.

Marcello Mastroianni (who starred in last year's worst movie, "A Place for plays a middle-aged priest. He does not appear bright enough to memorize "Now I lay me down to sleep," let alone go the whole course, but that is only one of the movie's problems. He works nights in a suicide prevention center. Sophia Loren plays a despondent mistress, whose IQ and bra size are both 42. It has taken her four years to discover her lover is already married.

Mar-cello talks her out of suicide and she falls in love with his voice. They take to each other like lint to a blue serge suit. She becomes pregnant (how or when is, blessedly, not clear). The church woos him back into line with a mon-signorship and a swell office in the Vatican. She LLLiUIJimMT ROLE Sophia Loren plays Valeria in "The Priest's Wife," now at Loew's Beverly Theater.

Though there is much effort to inject contemporary material (from the Beatles' "Something" to Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides and special material (including some elaborate attempts to salute states and seasons of the year in musical collages) into the program, the whole thrust of the evening, somehow, is in the past. The arrangements production work are so conservative the voice so consciously unemotional that there is really very little impact for other than a limited audience that likes lo bo soothed by remembrances of things past. Filling in for Waring (he is recuperating from a heart attack as guest host was Charles (Buddy) Rogers, who handled a few of the opening remarks and raced through the band at one point playing various instruments (from trombone to piano) briefly.

The audience Wednesday was only modest, but seemed pleased by the Pennsylvanians' efforts. RANDY BURNSSKYDOG BAND: Appearing with Livingston Taylor (reviewed at length during his last Los Angeles appearance) through Sunday at the Troubadour is Randy Burns and the Skydog Band, one of those occasionally, enormously enjoyable country-rock groups in the sloppy, but always interesting tradition of the Flying Burrito Sir Douglas Quintet and too lew others. Burns, lead singer and writer, is the best country-flavored rock singer since Graham Parsons, who was (and is) as good as anyone before him. Besides Burns, the group consists of Matt Kastner, lead guitar and vocals; Bruce Samuels, bass and vocals; A. J.

Mul-hern, vocals, and David Mohn, drums. The group has a new album on Mercury. SAN PEDRO Rbue? 6afry8.rtAr.hm. THE STATUE' 831-3370 Dirty Dingus MageelGP) VAN NUYS Roicoo E. of Academy Nomination!
