No. 1 Schedule -nnJrilL as SCUBAPRO U.S. DIVERS SPORTSWAYS VOIT operation, I was up around 5.1. Through the two-a-day workouts this fall, I never had such dead legs. But the coaches really helped me not to get too down.

They told me they expected it to be like this for a while." Last Wednesday, four days before UCLA's season opener, Tyler said his speed "came back." "I think it's about the same as it ever was, straightaway," he says. "The trouble, though, still is in coming off cuts. I feel that I lack both speed and quickness there yet. It was very noticeable to me in the Oregon State game. I had a chance to break for a touchdown once but couldn't do it.

Big Surprise "I sort of think it might be partly psychological, that I'm not using the strength that's there because it wasn't there for so long." Nothing was more of a surprise to most observers than the way Tyler and another gimpy -legged back, senior Art Sims, established UCLA's ground game early and made it last against Oregon State. um in Corvallis last Saturday, having played just the two Frosh games in his career as a Bruin. "Along with everybody else," he says, "I really didn't know what to expect. But after my number was called a few times and after I got to carry the ball some I was confident again." Tyler always has been an unusually smart, highly aggressive runner, and a crack blocker. He gained 1,500 yards as a junior at Neff High in La Mirada, 1,700 more as a senior and was named CIF Small Shools' player of the year.

All of those accomplishments led Jim Camp, then a Bruin assistant, to his door. Lost Speed "We became friends," said Tyler, "and that's the reason I went to UCLA." His career there began with a boom, 185 yards on 19 carries in two Frosh games. But the knee injury made things go bust for a while, robbing Tyler of his speed and for many anxious months his confidence. "I'd been timed in 4.7 for the 40-yard dash," Tyler says, "but after my second BY DWIGHT CIIAPIN Times Staff Writer It was an answer that became familiar around UCLA in the spring and again this fall. You' ask Tommy Prothro what he planned to do for running backs and he'd reply: "Well, if Randy Tyler's knee is OK, he could really help us." Tyler's knee isn't OK, exactly, but you would never have known it at Oregon State last weekend, when he gained 102 yards rushing including most of the critical ground yards on two third-quarter touchdown drives as the Bruins came back to beat the Beavers, 14-9.

Worst Injury Of all the woes that can befall a football player, a knee injury probably is the most frightening. Most other injuries heal, with time. A badly damaged knee, more often than not, requires surgery. Randy Tyler hurt his right knee the first time in the second UCLA freshman game of 196S. "It was a bad hyper-extension," he says, "and I was out the rest of the USC handed Alabama a 42-21 defeat in the season's opener, but couldn't knock Alabama out of its No.

In computing its top 10 teams, CompuSport relies heavily on how well a team does against other quality teams.

And I didn't figure to carry the ball 23 times. That's the most since sometime in high school for me." Tyler believes that one of the main reasons the UCLA runners were as ef-f i as they were against Oregon State was that they had played all fall in practice "against an awfully strong defense, our own. Our front four and linebackers hadn't let us run against them at all in workouts.

To me, our own guys were a lot tougher than Oregon State's turned out to be." Tyler appeared among the most poised of the Bruins when the narrow victory had been achieved over the Beavers. They Believed "I think we all had a feeling of confidence," he said. "Coach Prothro always stays under control. He told us at the half that we had outclassed them and that we were the better team and that we shouldn't be down in the score. We believed him." Perhaps it's that Tyler has already overcome such a large personal hurdle that a barricade in front of the team just doesn't seem that big.

He re-injured the tender knee against Oregon State was bruised, sometime in the third quarter, 1 and has been withheld from heavy contact work this week. But he sees no reason why he shouldn't play against Pittsburgh Saturday. UCLA figures to need his size (207 pounds) and ability against the big, experienced Panther defense. "My leg shrunk because of all inactivity," he "In fact, both legs shrunk. Sure, it's been kind of discouraging.

I'd just like to get back to the point, where I could run like 1 used to." Oregon State, for one team, doesn't care if it sees any more of Randy Tyler, however, even the way he is right now. 9.00 value NEBRASKA'S TOP TWO QB'S BOTH HURT ers extends even further than "I'm looking forward to meeting him again," said Newton. They grew up in the Southland, Yary in Bellflower and Newton in La Mirada. and they played in a prep all-star game together.

Yary, USC's strongside guard, was an usher last when Newton (6-4, 24S), Nebraska's starting offensive tackle, was married in Bellilower. "At the wedding," suid Newton, "Wayne and I kept discussing the game and threatening each other." As if that weren't enough, Nebraska's starting offensive guard. Keith Wortman (6-3, 237), also was in the wedding party. He, too, is a friend of Yaiy, having prepped in Whit-tier, and he is fresh out of Rio Hondo JC. Neither Yary nor Newton played very much in last year's game operating mainly on special-unit teams whenever USC kicked off.

"Our backs are going to find out," he said, "that it'll be a lot more difficult from here on." The Cornhuskers will arrive at 6 p.m. Friday and will be headquartered at the Sheraton -West.

At the Lincoln airport last Sunday, Cornhuskcr scout Jim Ross was visibly shaken over what he had witnessed at the USC-Ala-bama game the night before. "When he came in," said Don Bryant, Nebraska's publicist, "he looked as if he were fainting and needed two guys to carry him off the plane." Somebody asked Ross what he thought of the Trojans.
