Quarterback George Mi ra, a seven-year veteran the National Football-League, was placed on irrevocable waivers Tuesday by the Eagles.

Mira, a star at the University of Miami, was the second round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1964 but was used mostly as a backup there for John Brodie. He came to the Eagles in 1968 in a trade for tackl Randy Beisler and a draft choice. He run back punts and kickoffs and can beat cornerbacks for long bombs (he ran the last 40 yards of a 61-yard touchdown pass play from Tagge last weekend in Nebraska's 36-12 win over Wake Forest).

And USC knows about him, too. Of the SO offers he re-reived from colleges, Rodgers said he was most interested in the ones from USC, Kansas State and Nebraska. "I was really interested In USC," he said. "I thought I could play baseball there, too. and they're No.

1 in baseball." He talked the other day about how he worked out last summer in Omaha with O. J. Simpson. "O.J. told me he thinks USC will be the greatest," said Rodgers.

The End Zone The crowd at a a night's game is expected to tie more than 70,000, says USC ticket manager John Morlry, and possibly may surpass 80.000 Trojan coach John McKay says his team will be facing one of the na-1 ion's most physical teams this week. "If you ask me what team 1 liked most in all lhe bowl games," he said, "I'd way Nebraska and the way iv ran over Georgia, 45-6, in the Sun Howl last year." Since Devaney took over as head coach in 1902, Nebraska has more than doubled its seating capacity to Devaney's record of 10-1-2S-5 is the nation's highest winning percentage (.787) among active college football coaches McKay's record for the past eight years (G9-14-u) is slighi-lv better than Devaney's toil-lS-Oi. Wrong Numbers: It was Notre Dame, not USC, which rolled up those 517 yards rushing a record against USC) in the 1916 game, as previously mentioned here. Also, Notre Dame, not USC, won the game, 2G-6 The Trojans' single-game rushing record may be untouchable: lo'i yards against UCLA in 1920. The applies to the total offense record: 978 yards against Pomona in 1925 Nebraska's junior quarterback, Van Brownson, who started last year against USC and alternates with Tagge, lias been bothered for two weeks by an arthritic elbow on jiis throwing arm and probably won't play Saturday.

Another injured Corn-busker who apnears doubl-f ii 1 is Hob Wolfe IG-d, 2112) whi was pushing fur the stalling tight end job "There's no mystery why I like to play football," adds Weston. "It's because I like the contact; like to hit. This is what gives me satisfaction and it's as simple as that." DePasqua said that Weston reported this fall in excellent physical and mental condition "The attitude Lloyd projects," says DePasqua, "is exactly what I'm looking for in all my ballplayers. It's the attitude that separates good players from great ones." To get ready for the hitting of fall, Weston spent much of the off-season boxing. He began the practice in high school, saying it improves his peripheral vision, football and agility.

A year ago, DePasqua was pictured as a dour fellow with the conversational capabilities of the Sphinx. How times have changed At the start of fall, practice, DePasqua beamed at reporters and said, "I'm happy to welcome you to the beginning of a FUN football season." He modified the remark just a little later on. "I see a lot of you make me out as a sourball," said DePasqua, "and I don't go along with that. A part of everyone I've ever been associated with in football has rubbed off on me. but I've also had a chance to be myself.

"As for the 'fun' part of it, maybe I should say the season should be referred to as 'fresh' or But. there's no question I feel we will be quite a bit better." The words might not go down in history, but for DePasqua it was oratory like the "Gettysburg Address." Cindrich, who led Pi It in tackles in 8 of 10 games la.st season, has been called the linebacker at the school since Joe Schmidt. "He's a great football player," says DePasqua, "the soul of our defense. I've been coaching in major college football for 17 years and have seen and -worked with many top athletes. But I've never used the term 'great' in describing any of them, before Cindrich." Ralph made 17 tackles in the opener against UCLA two seasons ago as a sophomore but was injured in the game and played no more in 1968.

He was granted an extra year of eligibility, so now is just a junior. Rookie fullback Jeff Jordan and three veteran linemen were placed on waivers Tuesday as the Rams satisfied the NFL's final, 40-man player limit. As of now, there are two rookies on the roster middle linebacker Jack Reynolds of Tennessee and center Rich Saul of Michigan State. UC Riverside Gets Reid, Compton Star RIVERSIDE Riverside Basketball coach Fred Goss has announced the signing of Mike Reid, a 6-2 Vi sophomore guard from Compton JC, where he led the Tartars to the state championship and a 33-0 record last year. He averaged 17.4 points a game and was the team's playmaker. "He has the most maturity of any player we've had here," said Goss of Reid, who is 22. "He has unlimited potential." 12 TO 5 MASTER CHARGE i It happened two years ago but Tommy Prothro, the coach of the UCLA Bruins, isn't a man who forgets readily. Dave Havern, then the mini-quarterback of the Pittsburgh Panthers, pulled himself up to his full height of 5 feet, 8 inches and allowed after a 63-7 drubbing by the Bruins that 'UCLA wasn't' really that good.

"The kid was a helluva judge of a 1 said Prothro. UCLA, in 1968, Was 3-7. Now it's 1970 and Havern, having missed a full season because of mononucleosis, may well be the Panthers' starting quarterback again when they take on the Bruins at Pittsburgh Saturday. "You might say," notes Prothro, "that since he's missed a full year Havern is a retarded junior. But he's a quick, nifty kid." Even when the Panthers were buried here two years ago, Havern, in his first college game, completed 15 of 33 passes.

It is the measure of the resurgence of Pitt, however, that Havern older and presumably better-may not even start this weekend. Panther coach Carl DePasqua still hasn't made up his mind, publicly, between Havern and sophomore John Hogan, who is two inches taller and 22 pounds heavier than his rival. Both have been injured off and on through fall practice, so have alternated at the position. DePasqua indicates that strategy may continue Saturday. The cover of the Pittsburgh football guide for 1970 carries a picture of a snarling cat and a terse messagi "The Pitt Panther Is Back-No one knows since the team has yet to open its 1970 season just how far back.

But it came quickly the latter part of 1069 under new coach DePasqua. and is now stocked with 110 lettermen. The team split its lat four games, beating Syracuse, 21-20, and Army, loft. And the Panthers were locked in a 7-7 tie with mighty Penn State in the season's final game until late in the third quarter, before an eventual 27-7 loss. Don't look now.

but Pitt even has a couple of All America candidates. One is linebacker Ralph Cindrich (6-1. 220), who has performed very well the last two seasons against UCLA. The other is defensive tackle Lloyd Weston (6-1, 235), who was the Panther star against Pcnn State last season, making 13 tackles. "For a defensive tackle who gets his nourishment devouring quarterbacks, runners andor entire offensive lines, 10 months is a long time to wait between meals," says a florid Pitt press release.

"Lloyd Weston is hungry very hungry."
