ili-f made more mental errors tonight than we have in a long time. Nebraska is a real good team, one of the better teams in the country. But I don't think we were as good as we were last week against Alabama. Why? I don't know." Quarterback Jimmy Jones: I thought (Sam) Dickerson had that last pass of mine for a second. No, there was no special reason that I stopped throwing or a while.

We were just going to the run-ning game. I think that we played, basically, a good ball game. Both clubs did good enough for a tie." i Split end Sam Dickerson When I started to reach for Jones' pass on, the last play of the game, someone or somebody hit me and I turned a sommersault. No, I don't know whether I touched the ball or not. There were two guys on either side of me.

It was a post pattern." Middle linebacker John Pa-; padakis: "They went on a quick count in the first half and it bothered us. I guess they saw the way we were jumping around on defense against Alabama. But we changed at half time and went 1 with one, set defense a 6-1. We played pretty good de-. fense in the last half except for one play.

(Joe Orduna's 66-yard touchdown run). We weren't in the proper posi-' tion and we over-pursued. He cut behind me." Nebraska 1 Coach Bob Devaney: "We played as well as we could play, and, while you are never satisfied with a tie, it sure beats losing. "We had a chance to win it early in the final quarter. We think our kicker (Paul Ito- gers) is automatic from the 12-yard line, but the snap wasn't quite right and wasn't placed down straight When it went wide, I guess it wasn't too good a call, but I thought a 10-point lead at that time was as good as two touchdowns.

unless other wise indicated. 4 I if a Continued from First Pace They did, forcing the Cornhuskers to punt from the Trojan 45 after getting superb defensive play from end WiUie Hall, who caused quarterback Jerry Tagge to throw Mildly on third So, with a minute left, the Trojans drove from their 10 to Xhe 43only to, be forced, to punt after Nebraska called: time out with 24 seconds remaining. Why punt then? On 4th-and-14? It was more food for thought for the second-v guessers. We 1 have punted," said McKay, "had they not had that great' field goal kicker He can kick -them 52. yards." Now it was Nebraska's turn from its own 46 with the clock showing 12 seconds.

Tagge Intercepted On first down, a Tagge pass was intercepted by USC linebacker Greg Slough, giving the Trojans one last play from the 50. That's when Jones back-pedaled, behind a wall of blockers, and unleashed the bomb that narrowly missed its mark. In the USC dressing room, Dickerson kept his cubicle door locked for several minutes before discussing the play that almost pulled it out. He hinted that he might have been jostled by the Nebraska secondary while the ball was in the air. "When I started to reach for the ball," he "somebody hit me and I turned a somersault.

There were two guys on either side of me." He was asked if he had touched the ball. "I don't, know," he replied. The play was a spectacular ending to a dramatic game between two of the nation's finest teams USC was ranked No. 3 nationally, Nebraska No. 9.

The statistics were asto-nishingly close. USC rolled up 366 yards in total offense, just one more than Nebraska. The first downs were 19, USC's favor, and it was a game of give and take the Trojans losing the ball twice on fumbles and twice on interceptions, the Cornhuskers giving it away on three fumbles and three interceptions (two by safety Ron Aya-la). Both teams each carrying a proud reputation for stout defense into the game gave up repetitious chunks of yardage all night. The Cornhuskers, who marched to the USC 9 at the game's outset and fumbled the ball away, got 135 yards from fleet tailback Joe Orduna, who missed last year's 31-21 USC victory because of a knee injury.

Orduna Goes 67 It was Orduna, in fact, who put the Trojans in trouble in the third quarter with a dazzling 67-yard touchdown run he cracked through right guard and swerved to his left, turning on his 9.7 speed and easily outrunning two Trojans, Walt Failor and Bruce Dyer. That made it 21-14 in a game which Nebraska never trailed. Davis rushed for 116 yards, while the Trojans got 191 passing yards from Jones, who completed 14 of 23 throws and scored USC's first touchdown on a 4-yard keeper the second rushing TD of hi3 career. Actually, the Trojans might have grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter were it not for a touchdowna serpentine 18-yard run by Davis called back because of a holding penalty. But, in the final analysis, it was uphill for USC all the way.

Nebraska, with an of fenslve line led by ex-Southland JC Etars Bob Newton (Cerrltos) and Keith Wortman (Rio Hondo) giving USC's Wild Bunch its severest beating, scored first a 17-yard pass from fullback Dan Schneiss to split end Guv Ingles. The Trojans tied it, 7-7, on Jones' 4-yard run after Ayala set up the drive from the 27 with his first interception. Then it was Nebraska's turn again Tagge dodg. lng the USC past rush de critical moments on Jones' strikes to Bobby Chandler, who caught 5 passes for 83 yards before being knocked groggy in the fourth quarter. But it was the Trojans' defense a unit that lost tackle Tody Smith in the fourth quarter because of an ankle injury which concerned McKay most when it was over.

"As a team, the defense didn't play as well as it could," he said, "but that could be Nebraska." Then he paused and reflected philosophically on the thrill-a-minute night that was. "We are still a good team," he said. "We'll win our share." TEAM STATISTICS Ntb. USC Rrit down 22 Rustling plays-net yards' 44-208 52-175 Pimm 11-12 25-14 Net yard paisino 157 191 Pat Int. bv-vd.

We had planned to go for a two-point" conversion if we scored in the last five minutes or less (USC got its last touchdown to tie the game at 21-21 with 6:44 left). The reason we punted on 4th and 14 from our 33 with only a few seconds left was because they have a great field goal kicker LOCKER ROOM In Paul Rogers. He's kicked the ball over 50 yards.

Earlier in the fourth quarter we. tried to make a first down on 4th and 1 at their 49. 1 sent in the play. It was the same play that Clarence Davis scored a 10-yard touchdown on for our last score. "They (Nebraska) moved the ball real: well better than most people we've played against.

We really didn't take charge on defense. Their success on the option play? We looked at it all week and then took another long look at it.tonight. They run it from a double wing spread and sometimes you have to go soft, but we played it poorly. We decided to use a three-deep pass defense, because last year the Trojans beat us with three bombs. That's why they were able to complete the short passes by getting their receivers behind our linebackers. But overall, our young defense played rather well. "We didn't think we would a quarterback Jerry Tagge for this one. He worked out Monday night but spent Tuesday night in the hospital and they drained a pint of blood out of his left leg because of a ruptured vein.

He was able to work yesterday and that is the first time we knew he would be able 4o play.v Under the circumstances he played very well. Our other quarterback (Van Brownson) is a good one, too. He has had a sore arm, but he could have played. I just don't like to change quarterbacks when things are going well. 1 "It is difficult to single out individuals, but defensively our middle guard (Bob Ter-rio) played an excellent game.

On offense, besides Tagge, I thought Johnny Rodgers did fine. He's a tough, little 170-pounder. He may turn out to be a' real good runner and pass catcher. (Joe) we know is good and his 67-yard run was the kind of play in which he takes a pitch to the right and is supposed to run to daylight. He did it perfectly.

"AH the Trojans looked good to me. That Cunningham looks like a good one. At times we were able to stop all those good runners, but there are so many and they are so good I guess we did a good job holding them to three touchdowns."
