By Eleanor Ringel Staff-Writer glittering dead-end that turns people into products, mere cogs in a corrupt machine powered by cheap illegal labor-The stars, Zaide Silvia Gutierrez and David Villal-pando, are so convincing in their simple dignity and earnest naivete, it's hard to believe they are both seasoned stage actors. They bring the film a much-needed credibility that helps balance its nearly sanctimonious message and too-familiar plot We are haunted by their struggle, by their quiet endurance and by their humanity in the face of inhumane treatment.

And their fate to be swa lowed up along with the other wretched refuse of our teeming shores reminds us how America has welshed on her promise to the tired and the poor. "E1 Norte" is like a 20th century "Innocents Abroad." Only' these innocents aren't Americans in Europe, but a Guatemalan brother and sister who travel, at great risk to Los Angeles, that El Dorado of the '80s. Once there, they find the streets are paved with greed, not gold. "El Norte," opening today in Atlanta, means simply "Tire North," but to Enrique and Rosa, it means America the Beautiful, land of the flush toilet, home of the automatic sprinkler. El Norte: A drama about two Guatemalans' journey to America starring Zaide Silvia Gutierrez and David Val-lalpando, directed by Gregory Nava.

And the ghettolike hovel they share with other illegal aliens in L.A. does indeed" have a flush toilet. Enrique gets a job as a waiter, Rosa as a maid and they set about becoming Americans, albeit illegal ones. They enroll in English class and learn say, "It is usually very smoggy here." For a while, these eager immigrants make the American Dream work for them.

But the filmmakers, a husband-and-wife team named Gregory Nava and Anna Thomas, aren't interested in a Latin American version of "happily ever after." Things go wrong in fairly predictable, ways and the movie's last 15 minutes are undeniably maudlin. But by then we're so caught up in Enrique and Rosa's struggles, it's easy to forgive the film's unabashed sentimentality. At times, "El Norte" has the dreamlike quality of an epic odyssey.
