Many leagues have suspended league matches until after the holidays pin tournament, will offer a $25 bond as first guaranteed prize and all games will be bowled at the downtown alleys at 7:30 each night starting Christmas night and running through December 31. (fP) Commander John E. Whelchel, U. S. of Washington, D. was named head football coach of the U.

S. Naval Academy today, succeeding Major Emery E. (Swede) Larson, United States Marine Corps. Captain T. Starr King, Naval Academy athletic director, said the new gridiron mentor would assume his duties some time this month.

Larson, head coach since December, 1938, recently was ordered to report to the Naval War College at Newport, R. next month. Whelchel, executive officer of the academy's ordnance and gunnery department, was baekfield coach this past season. Whelchel said he did not contemplate changing the academy's present football system. The new coach, one of Navy's smartest quarterbacks in his playing days, came here last July after commanding the U.

S. S. destroyer McCall. He played football, baseball and basketball at the academy, graduating in 1919. He was a member of the Navy elevens of 1916, 1917 and 1918 and a teammate of Commander L.

S. Perry, U. S. the academy's graduate manager of athletics. Whelchel was assistant coach here in 1919 under Gilmore Do-bie and under Heach Coach Bob Folwell from 1920 to 1924.

John E. Whelchel, named head football coach at Annapolis today, is a son of the late John Eston Whelchel and Mrs. Lula Long-street Whelchel, of Washington, D. and was reared in that city, according to members of the family here. His father attended the University of Georgia before moving to Washington.

His paternal grandfather was Aaron Whelchel, of Hall county. His maternal grandfather was the late General James G. Longstreet, famed Confederate leader. He is a nephew of the late Ben H. Whelchel, Gainesville banker, and of Mrs.

STILL SMILING Billy Wilson, pro at the Bobby Jones course, is the victim for the second time this year of a freak accident, but the genial golfer is still smiling. Last week while walking to work, Billy coughed and then collapsed. After another collapse he was taken to the clubhouse, later transferred to Piedmont hospital, where it was found that he had separated veretebrae. Now Billy will have to remain taped up in bed for a couple of weeks. Last summer he was struck by a golf ball while teaching.
