"Forget it, no one any good is going to show up.

I'm going home." What had seemed like an ideal occasion to find familiar faces, Sunday afternoon's annual membership meeting of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), had turned out to be a bust. Unless you looked hard, very hard, it was tough to spot a legitimate star. SAG president Kathleen Nolan would call a legitimate star "one of the six-tenths of 1. That's who most people think of." Instead, what they should be thinking of is 77.7, which, according to Nolan, is the proportion of the union's card holders earning less than $4,400 a year at their profession. Down -to -Earth Concerns From the looks and sound of the 1,000 who sat patiently inside the Palladium listening to speeches, reports and questions, clearly it is the 77.7 who go to the SAG annual membership meeting, not the six-tenths of 1.

The event has about as much glamor as an auto workers union convention and as much excitement as the average city council session. If Steve McQueen walked in the front door, one had the feeling a mad scramble for autograph books would have followed. Like most workers, actors, it seems, have down-to-earth concerns. There was little talk about artistic integrity and final cut, and no lamenting, as so often is the case from big-name stars, over the paucity of good scripts. SAG members care about pensions, medical coverage, discrimination by auto insurers and the effect of technology on their profession.

Their representatives talk of "the challenges of the future" and how upcoming legislative issues will "impact" on the day-to-day lives of actors. Their leaders may speak with admirable polish, but they still depend on jargon and cliches. Speaking of SAG's recent seven-week strike against producers of and radio commercials, Chester Migden, the guild's national executive secretary, sounded like any union leader: "The significance of all this (the strike) lies in our serving notice that we will not be bullied, that the new tactics (by management) will not deter us; that there is strength and fiber in this membership and that it will, when challenged, use it." The audience responded like any group of loyal union members coming off its first strike in more than 25 years with a thunderous ovation, fcr Migden and for itself. Still, the Screen Actors Guild is not like any union. It is BY CHARLES CHAMPLIN Times Art editor The movies have their shudder bugs and chill seekers who prefer a taste of horror to any other flavor, with a relieved laugh for a chaser.

"Tourist Trap," opening citywide today, tries to prove that you don't need a lot of blood and gore to make the customers shiver. There is one quite nasty impalement early on, but the rest of it is more hokus than pokus, so to speak. The movie, directed by David Schmoeller and written by Schmoeller and J. Larry Carroll (who also produced), isn't really a fair test of the low-violence, low-budget horror flick because some nicely scary special effects and spooky moments are strung out along what proves to be a very slow and saggy narrative line. A flat tire leads a swell carload of college kids-dressed for Malibu although they seem miles from fun off the beaten highway and into a closed and ramshackle roadside museum deep in the hinterland.

Only caretaker Chuck Connors and platoons of uncannily lifelike mannequins are in evidence. There are even more dummies in a weird old mansion in the back. Common sense urges a hasty retreat (fat chance), but the car mysteriously won't restart, one of the boys is missing and night is falling. Connors has awesome psychokinetic powers or a good unseen handyman, and those dummies turn out to be not so dumb after all, or so quaint. The special effects are not half bad; they just need more forward momentum.

Connors tries hard to make the nutty caretaker as menacing as he's meant to be (there are very, very faint echoes of items from but the basic situation is defeating too solemn to be campy and too intermittent to be scary on an escalating scale. Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness, Robin Sherwood, Tanya Roberts, Dawn Jeffory and Keith McDermott are the imperiled visitors. They're all attractive, but it's impossible to say what any of them could do with more testing roles. The score by Pino Donaggio (who did the excellent music for another genre film, "Piranha," last year) is grand, and in a wild demented dance scene the music helps the film touch the kind of bizarre frenzy it seeks throughout. "Tourist Trap" is rated PG, which is reasonable warning that such violence as there is might sit poorly with the impressionable young.

The Charles Band production is being released by Irwin Yablans, who did handsomely with John Carpenter's "Halloween." "Tourist Trap" has its moments of effectiveness, but even the hard-line shiverists are likely to feel it's a long time between shrieks. quet of cherry blossoms for her leadership in the strike against the commercial producers. The union's treasurer gave his financial report this way: "I can assure you we have a very nice surplus. Don't worry about it till next year." Standing ovation. And the guild's New York president, Larry Keith, relayed hellos from the East Coast.

"I bring greetings from your fellow actors in New York," he said, "most of whom are now living in among the largest of the Hollywood guilds much larger than the Directors Guild-but different. The main variable is the level of unemployment. Asked what is the No. 1 desire of her members, Nolan answered without hesitation. "They want to work." SAG represents actors engaged in any film medium-television, feature films, commercials, industrial films.

One of its prime functions is negotiating contracts with various producers' groups. That covers a lot of ground and requires a lot of performers. It still allows for 80 unemployment. Yes, SAG members, as Nolan pointed out in a speech and reaffirmed in an interview, are concerned about where public television is going, how to find a new agent and when the union is going to work out a contract with producers of pay television. But first they worry about finding an acting job so that they can stop driving cabs and waiting tables.

While for the most part a Screen Actors Guild membership meeting is much like any other union meeting, it does have its touch of the theatrical. Instead of simply rising from their podium seats when introduced, the guild's officers came on stage from the rear through a closed curtain, as if they were practicing entrances on. "The Tonight Show." There were at least two dozen standing ovations. Actors like standing ovations. A young commercial performer, Creighton Falotico, upset the parliamentary order to present Nolan with a bou One recognizable actor sitting on stage was Cliff Robertson.

He is a member of the board of directors of the New York branch of the Screen Actors Guild, and a genuine hero among his peers. Robertson's lionization happened last year when he blew the whistle on former Columbia Pictures president David Begelman for forging checks in his name. Shortly afterwards, Robertson began talking of "Holly -woodgate," "creative bookkeeping" and how studios "cheat" talent out of their rightful profit participation. Robertson still is speaking out. "We accept that it (corruption in Hollywood) exists, but never that it must exist," he said.

And while he addressed himself to the danger of "corporate retribution" for those who speak out, he said that he has not been a victim, mainly, he said, because of his prominence.
