AP Wirt photo 75 -Yard Run Helps Lions Beat Buccaneers, 34-23 Chargers Defeat Chiefs on Last Play in Overtime SAN DIEGO (UPI) -Rookie John Jefferson, lying on his back in the end zone, grabbed a 14 -yard pass from Dan Fouts on the final play of overtime Sunday to give the San Diego Chargers a 29-23 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The victory-San Diego's third in a row-kept alive the Chargers' faint playoff hopes. It raised San Diego's record to 5-6, while the Chiefs dropped to 2-9. Both teams made errors in overtime. Kansas City's Arnold Morgado fumbled on San Diego's 17 when he was hit by Fred Dean and Mike Fuller fell on the ball for the Chargers.

San Diego then drove the length of the field only to have Lydell Mitchell fumble at the Chiefs' 4. Kansas City was unable to move the ball and San Diego took possession with just two minutes left in the extra period. Starting at the Chiefs 48, Fouts took the Chargers in for the score in seven plays. He apparently disdained the try for a field goal as he used up all the time on the clock for his game-winning touchdown to Jefferson. Kansas City threw the game up for grabs in regulation time when Jan Stenerud's 47-yard field goal hit the cross bar and slithered over to tie the game at 23-23.

Mitchell was the running star of the game with 144 yards in 29 carries and became the 11th leading rusher in NFL history, passing Ken Willard by reaching 6,155 career yards. Fouts did not throw a pass in the entire first quarter. The Chiefs' Mike Livingston threw only two in the first 15 minutes, both incomplete. But Fouts became untracked later as he passed for 188 yards and two touchdowns, completing 13 of 20 attempts. Rookie end Bubba Baker led the Lions' defense by contributing to five of their seven quarterback sacks. "We were badly beaten by a much-superior team," said Tampa Bay coach John McKay. "We tried to improvise but nothing would work We covered nobody on passes and tackled just as lousy. You don't see many 75-yard touchdown runs in the NFL." GW-Horace King broke open a tight game with a 75-yard touchdown run and Gary Dan-ielson threw a pair of TD passes to David Hill as the Detroit Lions defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 34-23, Sunday. The outcome left both National Conference Central Division teams with 4-7 records. Tampa Bay led 10-7 in the second quarter following a 27-yard field goal by Neil O'Donoghue. On Detroit's first play after the ensuing kickoff, King broke several tackles up the middle, cut to the right sideline, got a block from Dexter Bussey and Freddie Scott at the 15 and raced in for the score.

It was the sixth-longest touchdown run in Lions history. After a Tampa Bay-record 49-yard field goal by O'Donoghue, Detroit scored again in the half on a 14-yard pass play from quarterback Danielson to tight end Hill, who caught the ball at the 11, and dashed in for the TD. Hill's earlier touchdown was on a 2-yard pass from Danielson in the first quarter to cap a 90-yard, nine-play drive. Danielson wound up completing 15 of 24 passes for 206 yards. Seven were to Hill for 106 yards.

The TD run by King helped him finish with 109 yards in 13 carries.
