4 Pill IH-FrL. Oct 27, 1978-J- C30 AnflCU Gmt6 CALE'S GOAL: ONTARIO VICTORY Times 500 Win Would Be Nice Way to End 1978 Yarborough The Newswire GGLCCTAVIGBON THE ONLY 7-DAY PROGRAMMABLE 4-HOUR VIDEO RECORDER Lennie Pond of Chester, who won his first Grand National in six years this year at Talladega, is technically in the running for a share of the Busch prize. He has five poles. Others who have been quickest during qualifying are Neil Bonnett, Times 500 defending champion, with three; Benny Parsons and Waltrip with two each; and Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker and J. D.

McDuffie all one each. Qualifying for the Times 500 will be Friday, Nov. 17. Although Yarborough has not won in four Times 500s he has been a factor each race. Last year he was a strong third behind Bonnett and Petty.

In 1976, after clinching his first Winston Cup championship by going a single lap, he led for 67 laps before dropping out with clutch problems on the 168th lap of the 200-lap race. In 1975 he was fourth to Baker and in the Times 500 inaugural in 1974 he was third behind Allison and Pearson. Winston Cup standings: Yarborough has some other achievements in sight Another win would equal the NASCAR single-season record of 11 set by David Pearson in 1973. Also within range is his own year-old record of money won, He has already earned $411,730 and has approximately $50,000 more coming in bonus money from the Winston Cup points fund. Then there is the $10,000 Busch Pole Award for the driver who wins the most pole positions during the season.

Pearson, in the Wood Brothers Mercury, has won seven poles and Yarborough, in Junior Johnson's Oldsmobile, has six. Yarborough was fastest qualifier at Rockingham to narrow Pearson's lead. "I sure wasn't going to let David run away and grab that $10,000," said Yarborough. "We've been down before in races and come back. Now, we're carrying that same attitude over into the qualifying.

We want to win that Busch award and those bucks." Yarborough won the pole in March for the Atlanta 500 and is in a strong position to pull even with Pearson before the Times 500. The Atlanta track has been repaved since the March race and Yarborough is the only driver who has tested tires there since the repaving. Goodyear officials reported that he was about 5 m.p.h. faster than in March. BYSHAVGLICK Timet StaH Writer Cale Yarborough has already clinched an unprecedented third straight Winston Cup Grand National championship but the Timmonsville, S.C., race driver is coming to Ontario for the Nov.

19 Times 500 with winning in mind. "I've never won at Ontario," said the 38-year-old former county commissioner who has won 10 of 28 NASCAR races this year. "I think a win at the Times 500 would be a real nice way to close out 1978. And it would leave me with only one track on our circuit where I haven't won. Ontario and Pocono are the only ones now.

Looking for the checkered (flag) at Ontario gives me something special to shoot for." No one, not even the fabled Richard Petty, a six-time NASCAR champion, or yesteryear's legendary Curtis Turner or Fireball Roberts, won three NASCAR titles until Yarborough clinched his with a win last Sunday in the American 500 at Rockingham, N.C. Yarborough's win gave him 4,519 points to 4,123 for second-place Darrell Waltrip of Franklin, Tenn. If Waltrip were to win both the remaining races the Dixie 500 at Atlanta on Nov. 5 and the Times 500 he would collect only 370 points, not enough to overcome Yarborough's 396-pointlead. CALL TODAY FOR FURTHER INFORMATION 1.

Cale Yarborough (Tlmmlnsvllle, 451 Italian Grand Prix Moved From Dangerous Monza Track Monza, site of last month's Italian Grand Prix in which Swedish driver Ronnie Peterson died after a first-lap crash, has been removed from next year's Formula One schedule. Bernie Ecclestone, president of the Formula One Constructors' said the Dino Ferrari circuit at Imola will be the scene of the Italian Grand Prix the next three years. The 10-car crash at Monza which cost Peterson his life and seriously injured Italian driver Vittorio Brambilla brought a storm of protest from drivers and team managers. Seattle Slew will make the final start of his career Nov. 11 in the $100,000 Stuyvesant Handicap at Aqueduct, his owners said.

Slew is expected to be assigned more than 130 pounds for the race, originally a $50,000 stakes but doubled when it was announced the 1977 Triple Crown winner would be entered. In his last start, Oct. 14, Slew lost by a head to Exceller in the lV-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. Slew will be retired to stud in December. Veteran guard Norm Van Lier, waived two weeks ago by the Chicago Bulls, was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Rookie Delmer Beshore was waived by the Bucks to make room for the 31 -year-old Van Lier. The San Diego Clippers traded center-forward Scott Lloyd to the Bulls for a future draft choice. The Clippers signed Bob Bigelow, a 6-7 free agent forward and three-year NBA veteran out of the University of Pennsylvania. Dallas Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm, chairman of the National Football League's competition committee, has proposed a rule making it illegal for a team to advance its own fumble on the game's final play. The proposal was inspired by the controversial fumble play that gave the Oakland Raiders a 21-20 win over the San Diego Chargers.

"Obviously, you shouldn't be able to do what was done," said Schramm. Names in the News Joe Altobelli of the San Francisco Giants was named National League manager of the year by United Press International. Altobelli received 14 votes from a panel of 30 UPI baseball writers. Chuck Tanner of Pittsburgh was second with seven votes, followed by Roger Craig of San Diego with four and Tom Lasorda of Los Angeles with three. Terry Donahue of UCLA was named an assistant coach for the West team in the Hula Bowl, Jan.
