The program will begin with the construction of a 17-story, hotel tower on the southeast corner of the existing hotel complex, according to Morris A. Shenker, chairman of the board. The initial phase is expected to be completed in a year, he added. An additional 464 guest rooms and suites will result from the new tower, designed by Maxwell Starkman AIA As- sociates of Beverly Hills. The hotel currently has 1,000 rooms.

The western part of the ground level space of the new tower will be utilized for a reconstruction of the Sultan's Table restaurant The restaurant will seat some 120 diners. Adjacent to it will be the 60-seat International Bar and Lounge. A shopping concourse will occupy the rest of the ground floor, according to M.A. Riddle, president of the Dunes. Connecting the new wing to the casino will be a two-story rotunda with a decorative skylight complimented with shrubs and exotic plants.

The casino, restaurants and public areas will remain open during the remodeling and construction program, Riddle said. Convention facilities will be increased by square feet of exhibit halls and meeting rooms, he said.
