Except for waterfowl hunters, most hunters have stowed away the firearms for the year, giving little thought to anything. The "year" being much more than the just-passed year 2000. Instead of paging through old issues of sporting magazines, dreaming of hunting and fishing trips you read about, you could be making plans for upcoming hunts not far from home. These hunts will be here quicker than you might imagine. If you're anything like me, you mentally do your planning days before you leave for a hunting trip.

Those things can never be done overnight. Once I make the decision to go on a particular trip, excitement builds and stays with me up to the time I get to the hunt area. So, it is definitely not too early to begin preparing for springtime hunts offered by the Department of Fish and Game. There is a planned pig hunt on the Joice Island Unit of Grizzly covering a total of 14 days in February, March and April. The population of porkers on Grizzly Island isn't massive, and hunting controls their numbers so they stay in balance with the environment.

Not everybody who wants to hunt the pigs on Grizzly Island will have the opportunity. The first trick is to apply; the second is to be drawn. The kicker of hunting at Grizzly Island, however, is no big-bore guns are allowed. Only shotguns with slugs will be allowed for this hunt, due to the flat terrain of the territory. There will be a total of 14 hunt days, beginning the weekend of February 3-4.

The opening weekend is reserved only for Junior Hunters, 12 years of age and over. Hunt days for adults, which junior hunters may also apply for, are Feb. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25; March 17, 18, 24, 25, 31; and April 1. A total of two hunters will be drawn for each of the 14 hunt days for a total of 28 hunters. The drawing for the 28 permits will be held on Friday, Jan.

19, 2001. The applications must be received no later than Thursday, Jan. 18th. Each hunter may only apply one time and for only one date. Two hunters may apply on one application, but information required must be complete for both hunters.

Permits with maps and additional information will be mailed to only the successful applicants. If you do get successfully drawn, you may bring one non-hunting partner. Dogs are allowed. Early returns on the initial efforts of Granucci have certainly been favorable. Lucas Everett, fresh from a busy fall as a member of the football and soccer teams, started the pillaging. He picked clean a Capital Christian guard and niftily scored on a reverse layup.

What it lacks in marquee value, it certainly makes up for it in sheer defensive intensity. That lesson was delivered to Capital Christian last week in a semifinal game of the Mesa Verde Holiday Classic. The Tigers eased away from a 24-24 deadlock and into a 32-24 lead another steal.

From the right wing, Daniels spotted teammate Scott Mount dashing for the hoop. So he threw a sidearm strike and Mount got the basket for the 32-24 lead.
