Coach Bill Roper of Princeton has "been one of the few exceptions to the rule, tl so happens that Gilroy, who has received most of the long forward passes attempted by Princeton, Is far from being a fast man.

This fact has often been commented on. Tho only solution ever rffered that met with any favor, was that Roper, figuring his fast men would always be Covered, took a clfance on Gilroy, who, because of his baseball experience, was a sure receiver. Gilroy, however, failed to live up to his reputation In the Yale gvm Iropping three passes. By BILLY EVANS ICKING an All-America football team is purely a matter of personal opinion. GEORGETOWN, Texas, Dee. 8. Out of the ashes of Southwestern university's gymnasium which was destroyed by firo Friday will rise a better and permanent gymnasium if plans made by the executive board of the university at a meeting this morning are carried out. A fireproof building with modern -equipment, all costing approximately 375,000, Is planned to ba constructed on a new athletic field, and work will start as soon as necessary arrangements can be made. It will be located north of tho main building aid west of Mood hall, on the university campus.

Funds for the building are to be obtained from present students, alumni, friends of tho university and citizens of Georgeotwn. A mass meeting of citizens is to be held in Georgetown Monday night to consider the matetr. Twelve hunters got killed the-first day of the rabbit season. Not enough NO HUNTING" signs hanging around. Argument advanced la that football weather does not really commence until about the middle of November and that the season should not close until at least December 10 or later. Texas seems to be the victim of the weather when it comes to foot ball, whereas Texas college baseball Is probably by far superior to the brand of diamond stuff displayed in the north and east. But Southwestern football cannot hold a candle to the Big Ten or eastern games. T. C.

U. authorities at Kort Worth will make an effort to remedy the situation when the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic association meets this month. The move suggested is to open the football season approximately two weeks later and close the season about the middle of December. The T. I.

A. A. is a league of smaller Texas colleges and universities and has Rice institute as its chief member. The chief benefits expected from the proposed move are a speedier class of football because of snappier weather later in the fall, and also abolition of discrimination between players who cannot attend early season training camps and those who can. The opening of training season would be set at October 1.

W. J. ELEVEN DOWN DETROIT DETROIT, Bee. 3. Uncovering speed and consistent driving power, Washington and Jefferson's football team defeated the University of Detroit.

14 to 2, today, and kept its string- of victories unbroken for the season. It was the first time this year that Detroit has been beaten Washington and Jefferson scored a touchdown in the first three minutes of play. In the second period Erickson dodged through a broken field for a 53-yard run and a touchdown. Detroit's safety was scored in the second period, when Brenkcrt recovered a fumbled forward pass behind his own goal line and was downed by Captain Ellis. GEORGETOWN, Texas, Dec. 3-Coach W. J. Gardner announced today that he would arrange to play all of Southwestern university's basketball games away from home this season as a result of the burning of the gymnasium here Friday night. With seven letter men back in school this year, prospects were encouraging, but since practice must be held out of doors and games played on indoor courts the Pirates will be handicapped considerably.

Texas Farmers Cancel Contest At Stillwater Associated Pre. STILLWATER, Dec 3. Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College has forfeited the football game scheduled here on October 28, 1922, with the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College. It became' known here today. Although a contract was signed lost year for the game, the Texans claimed that the trip to Stillwater, in addition to other away from home games, would cause the players to exceed their absence limit for the season, and proposed Instead that the game be played at College Station, Texas, and another there Che following year.

This the Oklahoma Farmers declined and later accepted the Texas Aggies' forfeit of i300. FOOTBALL RESULTS At Dallas: Baylor 24, Mississippi College 0. At Lincoln, Wetleyan 17, Wayne 3. Offering in this sale Grove FATE OF HEINE GROH IS STILL IN DOUBT Where will Heine Groh, third sacker of tho Cincinnati Reds, play next year? Groh has already answered the question as far as Cincinnati is concerned.

When Judge Landis ordered Groh to report to Cincinnati and finish the season of 11)21, Groh said he would finish, but never start another. It is stated on good authority that he would have been a member of the Giants last year had not Judge Landis said be must play In Cincinnati or nowhere. McGraw was ready to take him over. In fact, McGraw's readiness to meet Groh's demands is said to be one reason why ho held out so long on reporting to Cincinnati. Now that McGraw is the manager of the world champions, he says Groh is not needed.

That sounds like the bunk. He will probably be with the Giants next year. On the other hand, it is said that Pittsburg is anxious to secure the crack third Backer and that Barney is ready to offer some of his stars, who are in bad favor in the Smoky City, for Grob. Conference May Put Quietus On Post-Year Tilts Definite action on the matter of Texas post season football games promises to be taken at the Dallas meeting of the Southwest conference next Thursday. The ruling which will be proposed by the University of Texas is that football games after Thanksgiving day be prohibited, and from all indications the general sentiment in conference circles is that the ruling will be passed.

Very few post season games are being played in any of the conferences over the country. The University of California Is having a desperate time getting an opponent for the annual Pasadena tournament. Cornell has definitely refused to go west, saying that the next game will be with mid-year exams. It is said that the University of Iowa wanted the California game, but that the -Big Ten refused to sanction the game. Last year Ohio tate presented Its case on the grounds that the Pasadena trip was to be made for stirring up west coast alumni into supporting tho drive for Ohio's stadium.

Year before lust Harvard journeyed west to dispell the growing belief that every Harvard man carried a cane and was a "Haw-vad" man. But sentiment everywhere is down on post season games, recognizing such games aa a starter toward professionalising amateur sports and making the universities little more than clubs in professional football leagues. Even Notre Dame has refused a western trip. Penn Slate's game with Washington at Seattle on Saturday is not a post season game, and was arranged for before the season opened by Coach Bexdek as a reward for his players after their severe schedule of eight hard first string games. The Thanksgiving dav battlo la still pending, and may not be played with either of the two above-named elevens, though each has offered the Hears tho game. Ono thing concerning the contest is def. lnite. It will not bo held in Waco.

An offer has also been made from the University of Detroit and Coach Bridges also 1ms It under consider ation. The El Paso Chamber of Commerce has Invited the Bears to tho border city to meet the Texas School of Mines, or tho University of Arlsona on Turkey day. while Shu Antonio hns also made Coach Bridges a proposition for a gnme In the Alamo City between Baylor and some good team. At tho present time, however, tho University of Southern California offer appeals strongly to fridges. It has not yet been definitely de-tided whether to pluy the University of Arkansas in Dallas, the last day ot the Dallas fair, or in Waco the first day of the Waco Cotton Palace.

If the fair board makes the Baylor authorities tho right kind of proposition tho game will be car-tied to Dallas, otherwise, It will be staged in Waco. Arkansas has agreed to either place. On Nov. 4, the Bears meet th Aggies in annual conflict at Cotton Palace park, and following this highly important battle, which may determine a conference champion, the Baylotites go to Boston for tho gamo, seven das later with Boston college at Braves' field. Six days latnr will find the Bears buck at Corroll field, engaging the strong Oklahoma A.

Kor years the enrollment at Brown did not exceed 1)00. which made the freshmen rule impractical If Brown hoped to make a good showing. This year tho enrollment has reached 1300. An investigation of the fire of Friday night, which entailed a loss of $10,000 including the gymnasium and all athletic equipment of the institution except the new blankets awarded Pirate football players, has begun, and It is said the blaze was undoubtedly of Incendiary origin. Boys asleep in the building said they were awakened by a dog and found a fire built against the south wall of the gymnasium.

Students Attack Referee When He Rules Out Score NEW ORLEANS. Dec. S. An attack en Refeee Finley by spectators and students of Tulane University came at the end of tho post-season football game between the Unlver-sityjof Alabama and Tulane, which Alabama won 14 to 7 here this, afternoon. The attack resulted when Finley" ruled that a 50-yard forward pass and touchdown was lllegel, as he had blown the whistle for time on the period.

All newspaper men at the gome agreed that the ball was in play when whistle blew, but Referee Finley ruled otherwise and had to be escorted from the field by 12 policemen. PLAN THREE STADIUMS. Columbia university, which has been having a rather disastrous season in football, is In no way discouraged. The university plans to do big things in an athletic way in the future. Dallas; March 27, 28. In doping out the possible winners in a running race, tne experts base their predictions largely. on the form that the horses have shown In previous starts, under certain conditions. In baseball" form amounts to little or nothing, as far as the individual performer is concerned. Of course, certain teams often stand out as the class of the league.

These teams figure to win a majority of games against any kind of opposition and In figuring a team's chances to win, the pitching selection must always be given some consideration Very often pitchers considered the class of the league. Invariably find it difficult to beat some tail-end team. Kor example, we wHl tako the case of Dick Kerr of Chicago. Pitted against the New York club, winner of the American league pennant, Kerr was a bear. Tho Yankees were beaten almost as soon.as he stepped into the box.

Now the Washington club wasn't nearly as hard a hitting aggregation as the Y'ankecs, yet Kerr always had his troubles against tho Nationals. As a matter of fact, Dick was lucky to finish a game. Shocker of the St. Louis club Is one of the greatest pitchers In the game. Against most any club in tho American league except Detroit, Shocker was always favored to win.

In the last four years he has beaten Detroit only once. Little Acosta of the Washington club is a great relief pitcher because of his rather different style. Ho la, against most clubs, not Chicago. Whenever he has started against the White Sox. Griffith has always feared for his inflolders.

All of which is difficult of explanation. It merely proves that form doesn't count for much in baseball. B. Track Prospects At Rice Bridit The track protests at Rice Institute for "are bright Indeed. With practically a veteran team on hand, including Preacher Llndsey, Houston newspapers are again claiming a championship for the feathered tribe.

Alexander, tackle on, the football team, and star weight man, has been elected captain of the cinder artists. In the sprints the Owls will have Lindsey, (loss and Metje though the injury- to the latter suffered during the past football season may hamper him on track. McOce is also a good hurdler. Kddie Dyer, who won tho conference championship in the broad jump lust year, will probably ha out for the track team, and should be better this year, as was the first season in which he has endeavored to do track work, lie may go out for the hurdles this year, according to word from Houston, (loss, a sprinter of note, will also be on hand, and Swartu, of the 1920 footbull team, will also be eligible for the track team. Coleman and Tisdale will go out for the middle distances, while several newcomers will carry the blue and gray standard in the mtlo and two-mile races.

Deprato, leading vault-er of tho conference, is back, and Hinklcy, a freshman of last year, is said to have bettered tho conference broad Jump record on several occasions. With little hope for a basketball or baseball championship. Rice will no doubt concentrate' on track, and tho Owls promise to make trouble for otlicr conference contenders in this line in li22.
