The movie works but it might have been better had it been made with more subtlety. The presence of evil is more eerie when evoked by innuendo. The screenplay by Donald G. Thompson is derivative (remember "The but has a sound premise and i 1" i BEST PICTURE BEST ACTOR BEST ACTRESS BEST DIRECTOR .1 9f Ik? av.

Director Gus Trikonis creates excruciating suspense.

His use of screen violence is cruel and visually gimmicky. Richard Crenna plays a psychologist who buys a desolate mansion to turn into a drug rehabilitation clinic and then recruits a staff of loyal followers to help. From the moment they move in weird and terrible things happen: Apparitions appear, a pet German shepherd turns vicious, doors lock shut and members of the group levitate and get electrocuted. Crenna, a skeptic, is unable to admit the presence of irrational maleficence and stands by helplessly as his friends die one by one. His attractive physician-wife, Joanna Pettet, is the only one secure enough to deal with the supernatural forces.

Performances are uniformly strong and interesting. Crenna is admirable as the cocky rationalist. As his wife, Pettet displays great spirit and charm. Andrew Prine, Cas-sie Yates, Lynne Moddy and George O'Hanlon Jr. are convincing as disciples.

Surrealism doesn't fuse well with exploitation and Victor Buono has a lame role as evil incarnate. Johnny Harris' music provides tense accompaniment. The sound effects are more frightening than the visual phantasmagoria. "The Evil," MPAA-rated has lingering and gruesome scenes of torture and death. Ed Carlin produced.
