This will be accomplished by turning on sun-type lighting during the real day, so that the animals will become completely turned around and our day will be their night. The zoo staff, headed by director Herb Emmerson, and its sponsor, the Nevada Zoological Society, confidently hope that the first increment of this unique facility will be in operation sometime next year.

The zoo's leadership, very conservation- and ecology-conscious, chose the dome type of structure because, in Emmerson's words: "Like the desert's barrel cactus, the BY TERENCE M. Visitors during the summer, when daytime temperatures routinely top 100 degrees, will stand in the shade of an air-conditioned dome amid descriptive exhibits, looking through big windows at paddocks containing bighorn sheep, camels and other desert-adapted animals. Going to other domes, they will see normally nocturnal forms of life such as aardvarks, kangaroo rats and bats dome has the least amount of surface area per unit of volume. Thus, just as the barrel cactus allows little loss of moisture, so does the dome allow little loss of cooled or heated air." The domes eventually to number about 25, although Emmerson believes they will have to start with six or seven will be supplied by Monterey Domes, a Riverside company which has been making and selling the structures for about two years.

Two features of the domes make them particularly suitable for the Las Vegas Zoo, according to Robert Gun-ther, president of Monterey Domes.
