The church is requesting the special meeting to avoid a delay in beginning construction of a remodeling project. If Wednesday's meeting fails to attract a quorum, the council will accept the minutes of the board meeting at its regular June 7 meeting, making it June 17 before the board's decision officially stands.

As approved by the board, the church building would non-conforming to the city's zoning ordinance by having an insufficient number of off-street parking places, parking in the side yard, and a 15-foot extension into the required-front yard setback. Virgil Freed, church trustee, appeared before the 'board at the May 20 meeting and reported that develop ment plans for the new building began in 1969. The parking standards were revised in May 1970. Chris Jeppsen, architect, told the board he had obtained approval from the city's building inspector in April 1970 for the project. The board granted1 the appeal, saying there- are "exceptional and extraordinary circumstances" involved with the property and the project: The board said the variance is "required to preserve its right to develop the property in conformance with the development standards of the zoning ordinance." The proposed project would provide -for a new sanctuary, with the existing sanctuary to be remodeled as a meeting room.

Dean Smith that they are calling a special meeting of the council for Wednesday to accept the Board of Appeals minutes from its meeting of May 20. The request for the special meeting was made by the First Baptist Church, 110 NW 9th which was granted a zone variance by the board at the May 20 meeting.

Agreeing to call the special session were Councilmen William McClenaghan, Dave Oliver and Charles Wilson. Smith said the council would meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers at city hall. The minutes will be accepted by the council if at least five members of the council are present. However, Smith stressed that council acceptance of minutes doesn't indicate approval of the- Board of Appeals' decision.

The council may, if an appeal of the decision is made within 10 days, reverse the board's decision. The jewelry and silver work are delicately exquisite, 1 I wrote glowingly of last year's OSU art student exhibit. This year I'll have to employ flashing neons To say the, least, the exhibit in Fairbanks Gallery through June 11 is impressive. Without picking up details, the viewer gets the immediate reaction of excitement, an exploding vitality! The works are not only fine art, but entertainment as well. One does not walk into a quiet inner sanctum of beauty worship. Instead, the gallery fairly Art has quite literally jumped from the walls to the center of the room.

It stands up or hangs from the ceiling. It is three dimensional and dramatically assertive. It is' serious and funny and whimsical and is graceful and delicate, sometimes weird and awkward. Above all, most of the work is well done, well thought out and completed with deliberate skill. Only in the traditional drawings and paintings does Night 1 one recognize the obvious neophytes, Painting isn't what it- used to be.

Not when it emerges as a velvet table with cloth food, or a velvet violin or a machine that doesn't do anything. How would you classify a little fir-lined glass box that vibrates and bounces around sequins? You can't always be certain if you are in a carnival fun-hour or an art gallery. It is a mixed media celegration that invites you to touch or laugh or admire or wonder. Banality and technology are the subjects of much modern art. But as this show, demonstrates, they are tolerable and even fun when a touch of non-sensical whimsy is added.
