The key word in this inflammatory title is "Influential," not "Greatest," and therein lies Hart's justification for including many of history's bad guys (i.e., Hitler) while ignoring many of the good guys (i.e Mother Cabrini).

Hart's ranking system may seem outrageous to some Muhammad is ranked first, followed by Newton and then Christ but the book is nonetheless thought-provoking and utterly absorbing. -DOUGLAS COX Buddhism, the First Millenium by Daisaku Ikeda (World Tribune Press, 525 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica, Calif. 90401: $7.95) is a survey of early Buddhist history, with some attempt to demonstrate a similarity between the roots of Eastern and Western philosophy. Essentially an essay, the book provides a general overview of the first thousand years of one of the world's largest and most influential religions.

It also provides some understanding of a non-linear approach to philosophy and clearly defines the original ideas underlying Buddhism. -JOHN KRASNO Celibate Passion by Janie Gustaf son (Harper Row: Gustafson does an adequate job of explaining this difficult title: We thirst for union with another (passion), and we hunger to be singular and unique (celibate). These two drives represent another illustration of Taoism's Yin and Yang. These are not opposites, she asserts, but complements, parts of the whole. Unfortunately, Gustafson includes so many quotes and considerations peripheral to the thrust of her point, this short volume (133 pages) drags the reader joylessly through 10 indistinguishable chapters.

This star is a mongrel dog, rescued from a pound the day he was to die, who went on to become the scene-stealing hound in the Broadway musical "Annie." The story of Sandy's early days as an abandoned puppy is a well-taken plea for responsibility to pets. A gift book that should win fans when "Annie" comes to town, especially among children who will enjoy the first person (or, rather, first dog) narrative. -CAROL BRUNO Money Madness by Herb Goldberg and Robert T.

Lewis (Morrow: Our money behavior (how we spend, save, hate or love it) is the subject of this work by two psychology professors. Readers will chuckle or wince as they read the provocative interpretations of their own particular "money madness." There's sound advice on how to keep money in perspective and how to recognize irrational money attitudes in others. Abundant anecdotes from the authors' practice enrich the text. -JAY STANTON This Land, These Voices by Abe and Mildred Chanin (Northland Press, Box Flagstaff, 86002: illustrated) is an oral history of the making of Arizona. With narratives and anecdotes, the 30 subjects recount the development of the frontier territory into one of the nation's fastest-growing states.

A Navajo woman recalls the forced march of her ancestors to an internment camp. Barry Goldwater and Morris Udall spin family and political tales. Though not a definitive history, the book succeeds in capturing the personal dramas of some of Arizona's shapers. FRANK SOTOMAYOR First Glance: Childhood Creations of the Famous by Tuli Kupferberg and Sylvia Topp (Hammond: $7.95, paperback; illustrated) is an excellent collection of fledgling works of famous people ranging from Pope John XXIII to Sylvia Plath. The selections are highlighted by critiques, biographical sketches and photographs.

If the book has a message, it's that there's hope for everyone. Amy Lowell's first poem about Chicago is entitled, "Chacago" (sic). The best of Johnny Carson's high school yearbook jokes is, "The only way I'll get out of school now is to be drafted." KATE DANIELS Killed in the Ratings by William L. De Andrea (Har-court Brace Jovanovich: In this entertaining first novel, there is murder afoot at Network International Headquarters. Matt Cobb is a network executive with the thankless job of covering up company misdeeds including everything from a TV star's shoplifting to drug abuse.

Cobb is arrested as a murderer and has to find the real culprit to free himself, while ratings of a key TV program are rigged with the help of the Mafia. It's unbelievable stuff, almost as much so as much of the fare offered nightly on the tube. BEN IRWIN 5T 73 70 72 71 rr 75 oT ST 180 82 85 79 9T 96 95 TO?
