ANDERSON Tlnwt Staff Wrlttr "My kids can spot a drunk driver as well as any policeman can," said Sgt. Hal Moore, Los Angeles Police Department traffic officer, and his tips on avoiding dangerous drinking drivers are echoed by Officer Tony D'Ambrosio of the San Fernando Valley office of California Highway Patrol. Thirty drivers, riders, pedestrians and bicyclists did not survive the 10 days of the Christmas -New Year holiday season last year, and county traffic officers are hoping to reduce the number of victims this year.

A maximum deployment of officers started to patrol streets and highways Saturday, aiming to get dangerous drivers out of holiday crowds. "A drinking driver pretty much makes himself known in traffic, D'Ambrosio said, advising sober drivers particularly to keep away from the drivers who weave from lane to lane rather than steer a straight course. The two spokesmen also advise motorists to keep erratic drivers in front rather than behind them, and to pass only when there is lots of room on the roadway. "Drivers who have been drinking can be recognized by their erratic driving either going slower or faster than the flow of traffic and by making jackrabbit starts from traffic signs," Moore said. "Drunk driving is an unfortunate term.

Dangerous drivers are the ones who are under the influence of alcohol (DUI), which is not the same thing as being drunk." He said that dangerous drivers may be the ones who have had drinks, but not enough to be considered drunk. Moore feels that taking a drinking driver off the road may be "the best Christmas gift" a peace officer could give anyone because he is possibly preventing a fatal traffic accident. Although 3,000 traffic officers will be looking for drinking drivers during the 10-day period, the CHP has requested help from sober drivers on the roadways. "If you see an erratic driver, phone us his location, direction, car make and his license if possible," D'Ambrosio said. The CHP emergency phone, statewide, is dial Operator and ask for toll-free ZEnith 1-2000.

"Drinking and Driving Is a Gamble You Lose," is the motto traffic officers are using. Half of all traffic deaths nationally involve a drinking driver and last year the fatalities in the county during the holidays ranged up to seven victims in one day, including a six-year-old boy riding on a bicycle and an 82-year-old pedestrian, according to the coroner's office. For The Record Gale Sokolow and Thomas J. Fitch, who were married Oct. 29, were incorrectly listed in The Times as being members of the La Canada High School faculty instead of graduates of the school.

"I can remember Greg showing up on his own an hour and a half before practice, spending the whole extra time shooting," said Goorjian.

Young Goorjian, hitting on 50 of his field goal tries and 80 from the free throw line, is on a team with other good shooters. Three of the other starters are scoring in double figures. A number of universities of national basketball stature are showing interest in Goorjian. They include Notre Dame, UCLA, Maryland, Arizona State, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Oregon and Utah. Elson, 5-foot-4 and 95 pounds, dominated girls crosscountry in the Foothill League this fall.

"Jackie's got the talent to record even greater success," said Dave Kemp, Burbank coach. "She's not afraid to work hard for improvement and she likes the competition." Elson said she hadn't run until her sophomore year when Teri Boiler, older sister of her girlfriend, Lisa, said, "Hey, why don't you go out for track. Running's fun, and the coaches are great." Both reported for track in the spring of 1976. "I wasn't too good at the beginning," Elson said. "But coach kept talking about persistence and developing mental toughness.

"Lisa and I run from five to eight miles every day. We train with the boys. It's helpful because you want to feel you are a good as the boys. It makes you work harder." Elson and teammate Colleen Tate were far out in front near the finish of the two-mile race for the Foothill League championship. They decided to cross the finish line at the same time to be co-champs.

In the CIF final, Elson finished 13th in a field of 132 runnersan exceptionally high finish for a first-year performer. Coach Kemp feels Jackie can run close to 5:05 next spring. That will win most mile races. SPECIAL Aj VALUE! TRIMS vaiidc at. SPECIAL REVIEW SALE OF THE YEAR'S LOWEST PRICES 5 PAYS ONLY DEC 27.28-29-30 31 ft LACGS REG.
