Wednesday, July 14, 1976 Section 3 15 scout Ted Mack dies at 72 Special to The Tribune TED MACK, who presided over the "Original Amateur Hour' on radio and television, died late Monday in Tarrytown. N.Y. He was 72. Mack began his entertainment career as a band leader and vaudeville master of ceremonies in the 1920s, and was later musical supervisor for MGM.

In 1935 he was summoned east by Maj. Edward Bowes, where he became Bowes' understudy and talent scout on the "Original Amateur radio show. He carried on as master of ceremonies of the program after Bowes' death in 1948. AMONG THE AMATEUR contestants who went on to fame was Frank Sinatra. who "was never first" on the show, according to Mack.

Others were Beverly Sills, Pat Boone, Ann Margret, Vera Ellen. Borne Carter. and Larry Storch. William Edward Maguiness in Greeley, Ted left Denver University, where he had been studying law, to become a professional saxophonist in 1924. He shortened his name to Mack two years later because Maguiness was difficult to fit into theater signs.

Jack Leon Jack Leon, 81, a retired Chicago restaurateur, died Tuesday in Miami Beach. Mr. Leon, who had owned and operated Leon's Restaurant at 555 W. Surf St. until his retirement eight years ago, is survived by a daughter, Mrs.

June Albin; a son, Seymour; six grandchildren: four great-grandchildren; and a sister. Services will be at 1 p. m. Thursday in the chapel at 111 Skokie Wilmette. Mrs.

Mae Feld Mrs. Mae Feld. 76, former Chicago resident and mother of Stanley J. Rose, publisher of the Sun Newspapers in Johnson County, died Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs.
