Run Chlcuoskmel WhM b) SMbm WllornU tmHM roum I In iust two terrifvine minutes tea the lives of 91,000 people were changed forever! catalogs that have become valuable contributions to Chicago architectural literature. Another stimulant was the State of Illinois1 decision to put much of its Bicentennial money into celebrations of architecture. A lively ArchiCenter was created in the Loop, and mobile exhibits traveled Downstate. The largest new Chicago structure Bearing completion at year's end was the giant Apparel Center designed by Skidmore, Owings ft Merrill.

Little else of consequence and nothing of much beauty was topped out during the year. Most of the action was institutional, and hospitals were high on the list of seemingly never-ending expansionism. The building slump, some said, afforded Chicago architects a perfect time for reflection on what they had done to change the environment in the recent past and how they might do it better in the future, 1 There was also talk about the potential emergence of a new, post-Miesian Chicago "school" of architecture that would sustain the cjty's unique design continuity and strength in the years ahead. But until clients with big money were ready launch Chicago into its next building boom, there was little chance of anything on that scale manifesting itself. Chicago architecture, for the time being, was semi-comatose.
