(1 By Paul Gapp Architecture crltlo TOUGH ECONOMIC times, a blare of controversy, and conceptual floundering marked Chicago archltee ture in 1976. The recession-created, building alump continued to affect even some of the city'a largest design firms, which were forced to lay off talented personnel. Students graduating from architecture schools last June found few job openings, and some settled for taxi driving. A few big, Chicago-based design shops depended heavily on Middle Eastern, European, and Asian projects to show a profit Some cast moral considerations aside and bowed to oil-rich Arab nations' demands that no Jewish architects be employed on such jobs.

Panicky architects searched hard for clients interested in rehabilitation and recycling projects, but the market for that work was limited, too. interest in retrofitting of old buildings to save energy was minimal. 1 One standout exception was the sensitive and sparkling restoration of Navy Pier, which in 1977 also will AND THIS SECOND ACTION-PLUS HIT become the site of the city's biggest aolar beating pilot project. But if most of this was a reminder that architecture is, before anything else, a business, there were other events to remind us that it Is also an art. The biggest of these and the most controversial were two competing exhibitions which opened simultaneously in May: "100 Years of Architecture in Chicago" and "Chicago Architects." "100 Years," sponsored by Chicago's dominant architectural establishment types, was largely a salute to the work of Mies van der Rohe and other adherents to the bare-bones, less-is-more design philosophy.

"Chicago Architects," organized by a group of mavericks, espoused the cause of design pluralism and called attention to the half-forgotten work of architects such as George Fred Keck and Andrew ReborL The shows drew national attention and provoked everything from polite dissension to downright nastk ness at the Chicago level. They also produced two G.nr.3 in a bounty hunter. He's a skip 9i03-120S-305-6i054i0S IwjL hits gtvs yon twice the blast!
