Lion gives Max a light, and then some light-hearted antics. Before long they're heading in the same "direction. Obviously "Scarecrow" is a variation on the buddy theme so beautifully presented in "Midnight Cowboy." But there's less desperation holding Max and Lion together than cemented Ratso and Joe in "Midnight here it's just two crude guys taking a fling at caring. There's much travail, a good portion of laughs, some real growth, and a meandering conclusion that collapses into a bitter end.

THE FILM BREAKS down during that conclusion when it becomes obvious the screenwriter doesn't know what to do with their mutual affection. Another problem with the script: It's lopsided. Gene Hackman's Max is given the scenes with a human dimension; It's up to Al Facino's Lion to deliver the heavy messages. Hackman turns in a performance equal to his superior work in "The French Connection," revealing a decency so rare in today's movies. Most of our current leading men are defined by their brutality or sexuality; Hackman plays men who have feeling and are confused by an unfeeling world.

Pacino's stuck with trying to spark his monkey character with a little reality. But he is defeated, his "acting" reduced flfr it Quentin for assault; Lion's back from five years at sea after cutting out on his pregnant wife. BOTH MEN no. Lion's a boy are slices of low-life. Max has got a powerful temper; Lion's got a powerful lack of responsibility.

But both are survivors. Max makes plans. He's got $2,468.73 saved up, and is going to open a car wash in Detroit Lion gets by with his sense of humor. "People cant stay mad at me," he says. Their older brother younger brother relationship builds as they travel east from California, with an expected stopover at Max's sister's house in Denver, and an unexpected stopover at a prison farm.

It isn't often a performance is really worth the price of admission, but if you can allow for Pacino, I think you'll find Hackman's work in "Scarecrow" to be that good. His career is taking off, and he may be the actor to lead us back into pictures that feature sensitive, men who really care.
