Tho the controversial "Last Tango in Paris" is making good money locally at the Mc-Clurg Court Theater, United Artists is planning to pull the picture from that theater on August 31 and place it in general release soon thereafter. ROBERT SHAW, one of our finest actors, plays Leadbet-ter, the chauffeur, and he brings to the pbrt a little more soul and less brutishness than one associates with the stereotype of a working class man who flirts with someone out of his station. But no amount of acting, regardless of quality, could conquer this tiring, tired story. WE ALL know that a commercially successful film is bound to inspire imitators. Enter "Badge 373" at the United Artists Theater, sired by "The French Connection." Hardly an imitation, it is more like a Mad magazine parody, only the filmmakers aren't kidding. It begins with a dancing scene in a crowded Puerto Rican club in New York.

A waiter carrying champagne wriggles his way thru the dancers, and, frankly, the only question in my mind was what disguise the cops would be wearing when they surprised the Mr. Big who had ordered the wine. I should have known; it was a Puerto Rican disguise. And right away the police start tossing ethnic insults and one-liners in a dismal attempt to imitate Gene Hackman's super performance in "The French Connection" as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle. "The only time you were clean," says an arresting officer to a junkie loaded with dope, "was at your communion." The film is full of Archie Bunkers in blue, the featured frustrated fuzz being played by Robert Duvall.

His chore: Finding out who killed his partner. Before he does, you will hear such lines as, "Eddie, you'll always be a cop to me." And, "He was like a brother to me." And, "I don't know what it is, but you can't run away from it, Eddie." You get the idea. Rating: one-half star. 1 Clurg Court. And now, if you ladies reading this column will please not place your belongings on the seat next to you, we will start the movie review.

"THE HIRELING" comes to town with praise and awards from the Cannes Film Festival, but what do they know? That is the only conclusion I can draw after seeing the film at the Esquire Theater. Tho stately to look at, and well-acted, the film treads old ground, English class distinctions, in an old way thru a doomed love affair between a titled lady and her chauffeur. Sadly, the only new element in this formula drama is Its pacing, which is agonizingly slow. Sarah Miles plays Lady Franklin, and as the film opens she is about to leave a hospital where she has been recovering from a suicide attempt following the death of her husband. She stands at the edge of the hospital grounds staring into a pond, her face ashen white.

She mumbles to herself. Her doctor recommends that she get to know new people, make friends, get outside of herself. But she has spent her whole life insulated from other people by luxury, a provincial and domineering mother, and the social amenities of the English upper class. She leaves the hospital in a chauffeured limousine hired by her mother and during the ride home exchanges words with the driver. She asks him to lower the window that divides them.
