Ryan tot 74, of HlgV land Like, beloved husband of Louise, net sleborti dear father of THOSE WHO WERE "lovers of money" In the 1st Century scoffed at Jesus. The Master was only a foolish dreamer talking about love, when hate was heavy in the atmosphere; urging generosity and largeness of spirit, when men were ardent in the pursuit of things for themselves. It was to such as these that Jesus spoke when He said, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures on the earth." Notice, if you will, the phrase "for yourselves." The prohibition is not against laying up treasure, but laying up treasure selfishly and without other concern. THERE IS a curious fact that runs thru our spiritual history, namely that spiritual values suffer in times of serious economic depression and at times of vigorous and expanding prosperity and affluence. We suffer spiritually from poverty on one side and from prosperity on the other.

The phenomenon is by no means new. John Wesley sensed the spiritual hazards of affluence. He wrote: I ear wherever riches have increased, the essence of religion has decreased in the same proportion. Therefore, I do not see how it is possible, in the nature of things, for any revival of true religion to continue long. For religion must necessarily produce both industry and frugality, and these cannot but produce riches.

But as riches increase, so will pride, anger, and love of the world. The simple truth is that the more we possess, the more we are tempted to rely on possessions as props for our lives and to discount our dependence on God.
