Piaaaan) PaM Strnn 'A f. i 4 I i I Vt jjJkem -i 'w 1 By Gene Siskel Movie critic IT'S TEMPTING to scuttle one's own standards and predict young audiences will enjoy "Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood" and "The Blue Bird," two new films aimed at the family market. But that wouldn't tell you much about either picture. Both are blown "Won Ton Ton" sounds like a good a slapstick comedy about a mutt in the silent picture era who revives a faltering studio with a string of action pictures.

What's up on the screen, how-, ever, is a scattershot comedy that cant make up its mind whether to be "whole-, some family entertainment" or a smutty film industry in-joke. It goes both ways. I Madeline Kahn and a sweet-faced male German shepherd play two of a kind: starving would-be stars out of work in 1923 Hollywood. They meet while grappling in the middle of a street for a turkey that's fallen out the back door of a poultry truck. The dog takes a licking to Kahn, and a friendship is born.

When troubled studio head Art Carney sees the dog dramatically rescue Kahn from a pawing stagehand, he has a brainstorm. Carney corrals pesky tour "guide and would-be screenwriter Bruce Dern Into writing scripts for the dog, which Dern falsely claims is his own. A string of hits follows. In the film's rapid-misfire fashion, it takes only two minutes to make a career and only two minutes to blow it. The fortunes of the dog, Kahn, and Dern ride this roller-coaster right up until a happy ending.

Before we get there, however, we suffer through Ron Leibmah playing a trans-vestite Rudolph Valentino and through the dog's attempts to commit suicide by hanging and by sticking its head in an oven. That dubious humor and a few bawdy lines of dialog earn the picture a rating. YOUNGSTERS IN the audience en-v Joyed most of all Won Ton Ton soiling a bad guy's leg. And for the older crowd there are dozen of walk-on perform- ances by such diverse Hollywood veter-'( ans as Stepin Fetchit playing a dancing butler, the two surviving Ritz brothers as cleaning ladies, and 'Hunts Hall as a furniture mover. If more time and money had been spent on the script, the "Won Ton Ton" publicity tour would have been unnecessary. 'The Blue Bird? An even better idea than "Won Ton Ton" is "The Blue Bird," George Cu-kor's U. coproduction of Maurice Maeterlinck's 1907 fairy tale about finding happiness in the true nature of everyday things. In the Maeterlinck story, a pair of children learn In a midnight dream that water, fire, milk, and bread have souls and personalities Just like humans. Or is it the other way around? It's a beautiful sentiment to say "hello" to nature, to treat natural resources as world partners.

But what a mess of movie! You may have heard of the production problems on this $10 million fiasco filmed in Russia with an all-star cast of both Americans and Russians. Well, the problems show on the screen. Elizabeth Taylor has never looked, uglier than she does portraying the spirit of light. She wears a '50s spangled gown topped by a Lava-lite tiara. The Russians in the cast appear as interlopers, their speeches badly dubbed.

The two starring children are as disingenuous as most movie children. Artistically grotesque moments abound. The film couldn't have its heart in a more right place, but what's up on the screen make this "The Blue Bird" one of unhappiness. Rating for "The Blue Bird" at outlying theaters: 1 stars. omamMi.
