A.TimBs 'Island at Top of the World5 David Hartman right and fellow explorers are attacked while trapped on an ice floe by a killer whale in "The Island at the Top of the World." theless and enjoy the movie less because of it. When we were kids, there were movies we enjoyed and movies that left us cold. "The Island at the Top of the World" would have been one of the latter.

rigor in evaluating a Disney movie, some well-meaning parent writes that my criticisms will not be noticed by youngsters. I disagree. Kids may not be able to verbalize these ideas, but they will experience them none FILM NOTE: Saturday In Tempo we'll present our monthly guide to films for kids. The quality pickings will be slim as always, but there are a couple of family and children's films worth your consideration. MOTION PICTURES 1 -1st Run Chlcagoland MOTION PICTURES 1 MOTION PICTURES lit Run Chlcagoland 1 tat Run CMcagoland ALL ANY KID should want for Christmas is a Disney film worthy of Walt's name.

Instead they are receiving "Is-1 a at the Top of the World," a "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" ripoff set in the Arctic. At the turn of the century, a American archeologist joins a wealthy Englishman hunting for his son, who disappeared a couple years TRIBUNE MINIREVIEW Eskimo pie-eyed Vi "ISLAND AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD" Directed by Robirt Simmon, icratnolay br John Whedon band on a novel by Ian Cameron, photographed by Frank Phillips, music by Maurice Jarre, produced by Winston Hibler, Buena Vista release at neighborhood theaters. Rated 6. THE CAST Professor Ivarsson David Hartman Sir Anthony Ross Donald Sinden Captain Brieux Jacques Martin Oomlak Mako Donald Ross David Gwillim Freyia Agneta Eckemyr back on a similar trip up north. The men hire a dirigible that looks like an ant-eater with a swollen belly.

It's piloted by a Frenchman, which in this kind of Disney trash means a guy with mustache who says zis, zat, and zee otherzing. En route to ice cube land, the trio drops into an Eskimo village populated with folks having all the intelligence of movie darkies of 40 years ago. Just substitute fresh fish for the watermelons. THE LEAD ESKIMO tells of a land farther north al-ledgedly populated evil spirits. But he's afraid to go there, shades of so many jungle pictures.

So naturally he goes there after being kidnaped by the explorers. Enter the dirigible into a land of Styrofoam icebergs. And what's this? A hidden Norse village preserved exactly as when it was first founded in the 11th century. There are battles with sea monsters and a superstitious Norse medicine man, but don't worry, the kid is retrieved along with his girl friend, a buxom Norse maiden who looks like Sonja Henie with a bustline. "Island at the Top of the World" contains one of the year's worst performances by an actor.

David Hartman, who plays television's goody-goody two shoes Lucas Tanner, is as stiff as he usually is playing the archeologist. But on the wide screen Hartman comes across as more than stiff; he's a zombie, reading his lines in a boom ing voice despite the fact he's often just talking to the person standing next to him.
