Time has pulled the rug out from under "Phantom of the Paradise." The film was directed by Brian De Palma, who last year made a fine, gruesome thriller called "Sisters." The only moment in "Phantom" reminiscent of that excellence is a split screen sequence where two stories are told at the same time.

PAUL WILLIAMS, the blond urchin who frequents the Tonight Show, and Gerrit Graham, who did a turn at Second City, make creditable appearances as the evil promoter and the composer. But this "Phantom" is only a shadow of its former self. off the promoter's top talent. His one desire is to have his music sung by the young girl that he loves. Slim chance.

THE FORM of the show is parody and put-down of every pop music style of the last 20 years: country, bub-blegum, and especially shock-rock. There are many "in" jokes that may bring a smile or two to the cognoscenti of the pop scene, Jokes about outrageous contracts, drugs, palace guards, and the malleability of teen-age The problem with all of the kidding is that what's up on the screen is childish; it has meaning only because it points to something else. To put it another way, joking about the rock music scene is treacherous, because the rock music scene itself is a joke. i by RHN CACf.HS- ftoted by WlllISM queen as part of the producer's gala opening night program for his new rock palace. The parody movie is in full flower this week with Mel Brooks kidding the horror movies of the '30s with his "Young Frankenstein" to be reviewed Wednesday, having dispatched the western earlier this year with "Blazing Saddles." And then there's Brian De Palma's "Phantom of the Paradise," which attempts to ride a couple of old horses: horror movies and the rock music scene. The film's title suggests the 1925 Lon Chaney thriller about a disfigured composer who haunts the sewers beneath a Paris opera house and takes a pretty young singer as his protege. This "Phantom" is set in the everchanging world of rock music.

A composer gets Lyric sets By Alan G. Artner THE LYRIC Opera of Chi- cago concluded its 20th anniversary season on Dec. 14 with the highest gross box office income in its history, according to a report issued by its business department today. For 47 regular performances during the 12-week season, ticket sales receipts were $2,015,609.75 out of a possible $2,021,339.50, This does not include the income from an opening night benefit performance or four student matinees which were presented at special prices. Almost all tickets 99.7 per cent were sold.

Overall percentage figures for each of the season's eight operas ranged from 94.8 per cent for Donizetti's "La Fa-vorita" to 103.3 per cent for a r's The latter opera also holds the record for the highest box office income for a single performance: 104.9 per cent achieved on Dec. 6. DESPITE this success, the Lyric's budgeted $2,800,000 deficit has not yet been raised.

Dec. 31 is the deadline date for fund-raising efforts, according to a Ford Foundation Grant which dictates that the opera company must be "in the black" by that time.
