The tap-ranked Bruins, seeking their fifth straight national title, whacked Brigham Young 91-73. That was the only normal happening in "the NCAA college basketball championship tournament Thursday night. Elsewhere the carnage was terrific as Marquette, Kentucky, Notre Dame, South -Carolina and Fordham went down in defeat Kansas and Long Beach State barely 'averted disaster. Coming to the fore were Ohio State, which snapped Marquette's 39-game winning streak 60-59; Western Kentucky, which -routed Kentucky 107-83; Drake, which tripped Notre Dame 79-72 'in overtime; Pennsylvania, which drubbed South Carolina 79-64, and Villanova which toppled Fordham 85-75.

At Salt Lake City, Utah- UCLA, 26-1, vs. Long Beach State, 24-4. Marquette seemed on the way to its 40th straight victory by taking a 13-point lead over Ohio State, but the Buckeyes kept battling back and came on to win after Dean Meminger, Marquette's star, fouled out with five minutes left. A lay-up by sophomore Luther Witte put Ohio State ahead at 58-57 with about onew minute left and two free throws by Alan Kansas just shaded Houston 78-77 and Long -Beach State had to wipe out a 15-point deficit to beat U. Of Pacific 78-65.

The results set up these quarter-final pairings Saturday: r-At Raleigh, N.C-Penn,. 28-0, Villanova, 25-6. At Athens, Ga. Western Kentucky; 22-5, vs. Ohio State, 20-5.

"We don't play much better than we did. If we do, we'd better play in the pro NBA." Adolph Rupp, veteran Kentucky coach, said, "We couldn't hold the ball and had trouble even getting in the right direction, but Johnny's team had a lot to do with that." Austin Carr who scored 26 points, sank a layup to put Notre, Dame ahead of Drake with 90 seconds. But Al SaTcys hit ajamper for the. Bulldogs with four seconds left to tie the regulation game at 62-62. Sakys put Drake ahead in the overtime at Wichita, and the Bulldogs stayed on top.

Maury John, Drake coach, paid tribute to Bobby Jones, who had asked to guard Carr. "I hesitated at first," John said, "but when a kid wants to guard someone that bad, 1 didn't hesitate long." "It probably was the worst game we've had," commented Coach Johnny Dee in the gloomy Notre Dame dressing "Nobody played well. I thought we "had won. on Carr's five straight points near the end of -regulation, but Dave Robish scored 29 points, including: seven straight free throws in the last two minutes, as Kansas made it 20 in a row by shading Houston at Wichita. Penn, playing what Coach Dick Harter said "mfght be our best win ever," made it 28 straight and became the country's only major unbeaten team by defeating South Carolina at Raleigh.

Bob Morse led the Quakers with 28 points. Villanova, led by Howard Porter's 20 points, took air il-point halftime-lead and stayed in front, the rest of the way in ending the Cinderella dreams of surprising' Fordham. Charlie Yelverton paced the Rams with 32 points. Long Beach, behind late in the first half at 44-29, rallied to down Pacific for its 17th straight victory in the West Regional at Salt -Lake City, led by George Trapp's 23 points. Brigham Young.

stayed close to UCLA at: 36-31, but once the Bruins put on their famed zone press it was no contest. Six UCLA players scored in double figures led by Henry Bibby's 15 and Sidney Wicks' 14. Old Dominion and Evansville advanced to tonight's final of the NCAA college division championship tourney at Evansville, Ind. Old Dominion beat Kentucky Wesleyan 97 83 and Evansville overcame Southwestern Louisiana 93-74 in Thursday's semifinals.

It's been "dead week" for football recruiting, the period -when college coaches can't contact high school grid prospects. It's also the time when the prep stars decide on the college they will attend, although many wait until later in the spring. Oregon State Head Football Coach Dee Andros, with assistant Sam Boghosian, is using this week to view one of the nation's most successful college grid programs in action. Andros and Boghosian are in Austin, watching a week of spring football practice by the Texas Longhorns. They're the guests of Darrell Royal, one of Dee's college grid teammates at the University of Oklahoma.

Offenses Are Similar Oregon Stat and tha Longhorns run similar offenses, although Texas has its own variation of the full T-formation backfield. The Longhorns line up their fullback closer to the line of scrimmage In what is called the "Wishbone-T," one of the newer and more famous offensive formations in college ball. But both OSU and Texas basically run the fullback up the middle, the quarterback option outside and halfback trap plays. ft ft ft --v The Beavers, incidentally, don't have the same home schedule they enjoyed last season. OSU, remember, played five games at Parker Stadium and one in Portland in the 11 game 1970 slate.

This fall the Beavers are at Parker Stadium only three times Iowa, Stanford and Washington Stat. They also have en Portland gam against Arizona Stat. Road trips take Oregon State to Georgia, Michigan State, UCLA, California, Washington, Arizona and Oregon. Wallowa Loses Opener Of Class A Meet 'V PENDLETON (AP) The defending champion won't be around for finals of the Oregon Class A prep basketball tournament. Neither will be the only unbeaten team going into the 37th annual attraction.

Wallowa, which went all the" way last year, got bumped out of the running 60-49 by "Pilot Rock Thursday in the first game of the 1971 tourney. And Enterprise, which hadn't lost in 24 games this season, lost, to powerful Knappa 70-60 despite a fourth quarter rally. Another surprise was provided by Gilchrist, "which walloped Heppner and earned a shot at Knappa in a semifinal game tonight. The other first round winner was Siletz, which outscored Concordia Lutheran by eight points In the final period for a 56-46 triumph. Knappa, which dropped to Class A this season after being runnerup in last year's A-2 (now AA) tournament, will meet.

Gilchrist tonight at 9. The other semifinal matched Pilot Rock and Siletz at 3:30. Consolation games sent Concordia Lutheran against Wallowa at 1:30 and had Enterprise and Heppner matched at 7:30. Gilchrist used its superior size to dominate the backboards against Heppner and Steve Oxborrow contributed 22 points. Knappa, which has "only three seniors, built a 56-25 lead, but Enterprise stormed back to within 64-56.

BYU ii AAU Tourney Opens Tonight The Oregon AAU Town Team basketball tournament gets under way at Highland View Junior High tonight at 6 o'clock. Eugene plays defending champion BMA of Corvallis in the opener, followed by Portland vs. Rosebiirg, Peacock of Corvallis vs. Ter-rebone and Tillamook vs.

Pendleton. Overawes' The tough part of the slate comes early. In the season's third game the Orangemen trek to East Lansing to play Michigan State. This intersectional is followed by two more road games, PAC-8 contests at UCLA and California. Don't Have To Play USC They're the first two league games for OSU, so if the Beavers plan on being In the race to the Rose Bowl, they'll have to get by these two games in enemy stadiums.
