MOVIE REVIEW 103 9ngelt8 Eimtt Dec. 20, 1976 Pt IV 1 7 1 5 Triday' for Die -Hard Disney Fans Wk 9 RECOMMEND 1 BY KEVIN THOMAS Times Staff Writer MON -FBI 6:15 I IS 4 10 15 PM ration SAT. A SUN. 2:15 4:15 3SB 6:15 15 tt T17 WARNIHG fi32 6:00 11:00 "Freaky Friday" is at its best when it shows a basically loving mother and daughter becoming better able to understand each other by quite literally occupying each other's shoes for a day. Also, it is touching when Miss Foster discovers how perceptive and adoring is her little brother (Sparky Marcus) whom she has resented for his natural good looks and spontaneous passion for neatness.

However, "Freaky Friday" becomes awfully trite with its incredible chase-crazy aquacade climax. Miss Harris is so special in her antic charm that it's always worth seeing her, even though her rather infrequent screen appearances are usually in family entertainments. Once again Miss Foster, here a typical healthy adolescent, astonishes in her versatility. Right around the corner from where "Freaky Friday" is playing she can be seen as a miniature Harlow in "Bugsy Malone" at the Crest. Earlier in the year she was remarkable as the child prostitute in "Taxi Driver." No Disney film is complete without several favorite veteran players.

Besides Patsy Kelly there are Fritz Feld as Miss Foster's band instructor, Marie Windsor as her typing teacher and Iris Adrian as a lady on a bus perplexed by Miss Foster's antics. (Hopefully before "Freaky Friday" goes into general release in February the misspelling of Miss Ballard's and Marvin Kaplan's names in the opening credits will be corrected. BRUIN. Norco CREST. Long Beach CINEMALAND. Anaheim FREMONT. San Luis Obispo FOX, Oxnard MATINEES DAILY One Friday morning an attractive housewife (Barbara Harris) complains to her husband (John Astin) that their tomboyish, rebellious 13-year-old daughter (Jodie Foster) "hasn't a clue about my life." At that very instant mother and daughter undergo a magical exchange of bodies and thereby discover what each other's life is really like. It's an apt premise for a Disney picture, and "Freaky Friday" (at the UA Cinema Center in Westwood for a special one-week engagement) ought to please Disney fans.

Adapted by Mary Rodgers from her own book and smoothly directed by Gary Nelson, "Freaky Friday" has the stuff of a stronger, more sophisticated film but has been processed to fit into the bland, synthetic Disney formula. Even so, both Miss Harris and Miss Foster make the most of their offbeat opportunity. While the mother goes off to school inhabiting her daughter's body, the daughter stays at home, discovering quite rapidly that her mother's life isn't as cushy as she had assumed. The mother, in turn, meets disaster in typing class and on the hockey field the vying teams' coaches, amusingly, are Kaye Ballard and Ruth Buzzi but proves a whiz at history. At home the daughter finds it impossible to cope with a washing machine and a crusty cleaning lady (Patsy Kelly) but, in the form of her mother, easily charms the neighbor boy (Marc McClure) whom she has long worshiped from afar.

Later in the day, however. Miss Harris and Miss Foster are to be faced with a formidable challenge. Astin is hosting an important business outing at a marina that is to be highlighted by an aquacade with his daughter as its star and, in a pinch, he has asked his wife to whip up a banquet meal for 25 on a moment's notice. Alas, Miss Harris can no more water ski than her daughter can cook.
