But conspicuously absent from Heatwave's "Too Hot to Handle," featuring the hit single "Boogie Nights," is any picture of this group. It was not an oversight. Leader Johnnie Wilder, a shrewd 28-year-old singer from Dayton, Ohio, didn't want American pop music fans to see this rhythm and blues band until the album was a hit Since "Boogie Nights" is in the Top 5 and "Too Hot to Handle" is about to break into the Top 10, the need for secrecy is past. The reason for Wilder's efforts to keep the band members out of the limelight is that Heatwave is a mixed band four blacks and three whites. He figured it's more difficult for such a group to get started so, initially, wanted as few people as possible to know about the racial factor.
