Yf- BY MAL FLORENCE The top collegiate scorer, a coach with a local background and an impressive record and a team which runs with abandon that's the Utah package. If it's color fans crave, then Utah's Redskins can supply same. The Utes, led by center Billy (The Hill) McGill, former Jeffersor High star, and coached by Jack Gardner, a former Trojan cage star, clash with West Virginia Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Los Angeles Basketball Classic at the Sports Arena. Title Team This wasn't supposed to be Utah's year since Gardner lost three of five starters from a club which won the Skyline Conference title last season and gained the final round of four in the NCAA tournament.

But the Redskins are off and running prognosti-cators be damned. There's no such thing as a one-man team (a physical impossibility), but Mc-Gill's presence makes the bromide plausible. The 6ft. 9in. Utah center is the most prolific scorer in the nation, averaging 38 points a game.

This average has propelled Utah to an impressive 8-1 record including a 101-71 victory over Loyola, defending West Coast Athletic Conference champion. New Toughness Stamina, something McGill lacked last year, is part of his make-up this season. Billy is staying on the pace and controlling the backboards with authority. It's difficult to lose regulars like Jim Rhead, Rich Ruffell and Joe Morton and still come up with a winner, but Gardner is doing the job. Starting with McGill (some start) and guard Ed Rowe (6-2), Gardner has 'filled in with letter-men reserves Joe Aufder- W- tag CLOSE CALL Houston's George Blanda barely gets pass off in Sunday's AFL title game while surrounded by Chargers." A word on Farrell. Last spring Joe White, the Hancock junior college coach, reported: "I have one of the greatest shooters I've ever seen." White was referring to Farrell, who followed the Barbasol sig.ns to Salt Lake City. Nevertheless, junior college to college is a big jump in the company Utah consorts with and Gardner should take a few bows.

After tonight's game, the club will travel to Boston for a Tuesday night game, then plays Syracuse Wednesday in Philadelphia and Thurs day in Syracuse, and winds up riday night at Hershey, with the Warriors. The Lakers then return toj Los Angeles for Sports Arena dates on Jan. 1 and 3 versus the Warriors.

I NATION'S BEST Cage Must BY PAUL ZIMMERMAN Sports Editor If you're thinking about the Rose Bowl and overlooking the basketball classic at the Sports Arena beginning Wednesday, you're making a mistake. Among the teams playing in this third annual cage tournament are the No. 1 quintet in the nation and champion of the Big Ten; the victor in the Sky- Paul Zimmerman line area; champion of the Southern conference, and the first three teams of the Big Five. We are talking about Ohio State, Utah, West Virginia, Southern California, UCLA and Washington. Add to the list Purdue, No.

2 in the Big Ten and Army, one of the top fives in the East, and you get the picture. Stars Aplenty So you want to know what individual stars are involved? After all, the names attract the fans. O.K. Let's start off with Jerry Lucas, the Ohio State stripling who made the 1960 Olympic team as a sophomore and stole the show at Rome. Naturally, he's a two time All America player and shooting for a clean sweep this year.

He also led the nation in 1961 with a .623 average of field goals scored and set the pace on rebounds with 19.8. The other 1961 All-America star is Terry Dis-chinger, a mere 6ft. 7in. lad from Purdue. On the second team was Bill Mc- OFFICIALS Continued from First Page their plates," grinned the 39-year-old millionaire.

Houston coach Wally who replaced Lou Rymkus as head man ten games ago, was acting as though he had just inherited a million. "Our pre -game strategy worked said the crew-cut Lemm. "Our plan was to rush the passer early in the game so he'd be forced to keep two backficld men with him as blockers. It worked. Didn't that (Ed) Husmann and (Don) Floyd play a wonderful game?" Husmann, a right defensive tackle, and Floyd, the right defensive end, harried San Diego quarterback Jack -Kemp all afternoon.

Gillman Agrees Charger coach Sid Gillman even' went so far to say he thoueht Husmann should have been named player of the fame instead of Oiler halfback Billy Cannon. Even Cannon expressed surnrise that he was picked th outstanding player for the- second straight year. Long Beach Six Trips LA, 13-10 In a wild scoring game Tnff Beach. Buckeyes Favored Add such super-charged players as John Rudomet-, kin of USC; Gary Cunningham, UCLA; Bill Hanson, Washington; Rod Thorn, West Virginia; and Chuck Richards, Army, and you get a hazy idea of what is in store for you in this tournament. Who's going to win it? Well, Ohio State hopes to. Their football team denied admission to the Rose Bowl, the Buckeyes figure they have to make up for it with a big showing on the court. The only way the Ohio giants can atone for the tragedy of last season is win all of their 24 regular games plus four for the national championship. You see, it's like this: The Buckeyes missed their bid for a second straight national championship when they lost to Cincinnati in the finals at Kansas City.

Disappointment Reigns Good friend Si Burick of the Dayton Daily News, quotes Coach Fred Taylor on the subject "After we received the runner-up trophy, Larry Siegfried put it down in our dressing room. Nobody else even looked at it. Our trainer carried it out. Our only defeat in 28 games left us feeling mighty low. Our boys simply weren't satisfied with second place." Favored all the way, Ohio State had been beaten 70 to 65 in overtime.

The Buckeyes can field an all-senior team here with Lucas, John Havlicek, Mel Nowell, Gary Gear-hart and Bob Knight. You have to figure that if Ohio State was so bitter about finishing second in the NCAA championship, then the Buckeyes must be fixing to walk off with the title here. Especially since their faculty took such a dim view of the Big Ten championship football team playing in the Rose Bowl. RAPPED "It should have been George Blanda," said the key to our success, and was great out there today. He passed for the winning touchdown and kicked the other four points, didn't he?" "This was the worst offi ciated game of the year," said Gillman.

"There have been some bad ones, but this had to be the worst," he added. Second Choice Cannon, as it turned out, hadn't planned on getting pass that he caught for the touchdown. "On that touchdown play Charley Hennigan was our primary target. But Blanda was rushed so badly that he threw to our secondary tar get. Cannon," said Lemm in telling of the games only touchdown play.

McCarthy went into the air for a pass and hit the court hard, twisting his knee.
