Uos angtlcs Cimra Feb. 1, 1977 Part IV 1 1 TUESDAY'S TV PROGRAMS CECIL SMITH 'Roots' Reaps Vast Harvest Continued from First Page black viewpoint whites invariably were callous, cruel, sadistic, unfeeling (with few exceptions) while blacks were nature's noblemen, sometimes insufferably so as in Tom, the blacksmith. Maybe some national guilt complex was involved. I remember years ago that the playwright team of Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich was utterly astonished to find their dramatic indictment of Nazi Germany, "Diary of Anne Frank," playing in theaters all over Germany, an enormous hit. I imagine that the why of watching "Roots" would make one of the most fascinating sociological studies of modern America.

As an erudite music critic said: "I don't like it, but I can't stop watching it." There was rough, raw power in Stan Margulies' production, a sense of life beyond the comic book level of most TV that was compelling.

Seemed Below Expectations There seems to me a kind of senseless pastime by many critics, particularly in the magazines, to compare television to movies or documentaries, which is a little silly like pulling wings off flies. "Roots" was a TV event that could happen nowhere but on this electronic stage. But even in a TV context, "Roots" seemed at times below expectations. It's hard to believe that the British, say, would make "Roots" without going to Africa for that opening sequence. No matter how they dressed it up, it was still Georgia, and those grass huts were straight off the art director's drawing board.

The writing was drab and colorless. Haley's dialogue is not the strongest element of his book, but it far surpasses the pedestrian talk in the film. The direction seemed hurried. Again, the British system of taking a year to film a show of such size and using a single director would have helped. A few bad blacks and good whites or some variations on the basic black-and-white would have given more credibility Burl Ives and Lloyd Bridges were comic-book cutouts; the cracker of Brad Davis seemed right off the UCLA campus.

But the acting as a whole was exceptional often above the material. The work of young LeVar Burton, of Madge Sinclair and Leslie Uggams, of Vic Morrow in a villainous character that had genuine layers to it, maybe the best drawn white of the lot, of Paul Shenar in a brilliant bit, and particularly, Ralph Waite and Ben Vereen was of the highest order. Beautifully Defined Performances But the one performance that towered above all others in "Roots" was Lou Gossett's Fiddler. Here was a flamboyant character that could have easily faded into a cartoon that Gossett gave such breath and life and body to, such dimensions that he almost seems like someone you knew and walked and talked with and found pleasure in his company. It was as skillful an acting job as you are ever likely to see on television or anywhere.

Gossett, 40, has been giving beautifully defined performances for years without much recognition remember his "Skin Often he's mired in incredibly bad material the series "The Young Rebels," for instance. I first remember him on Broadway in "My Sweet Charlie," doing the lawyer that Al Freeman Jr. later played on television in another "TV event" that did better than anyone expected, drawing a massive audience. Gossett came here in the Inner City Culture Center repertory company and played Tartuffe in that best-forgotten production that launched the ICCC. From the time of his Broadway debut in "Take a Giant Step" in 1953, Lou Gossett has always been billed as Lou Gossett.

But during the filming of "Roots," he went to producer Margulies and said that for the first time he felt he was in a project so important he'd like to change his billing and be known by his full name. Louis Gossett Jr. He was thinking of his roots.
