l03 SltgrlfS iTimfS Tues, Oct. 19. 1976 -Part IV 1 1 KOSINSKI while book reading filled only five hours or 0.2 of the expanding leisure time. Kosinski combined the entire volume of the publishing industry at S1.2 billion per year, a striking comparison with the $1.4 billion annually spent to purchase 30 seconds of commercial time by advertisers on television. "By insisting its product become popular, the popular culture also insists its product is central to us." EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT NOW PLAYING Ht'sLIagic! The National Vasectomy Club in which eligible members are given a sterling silver lapel pin or tie-tack, a membership card and a bumper sticker. "There are 80 million cars in this country so I can understand the bumper sticker," Kosinski commented. "But where would you use the membership card?" Candypants, 100 edible underwear, one size fits all, in three flavors: butterscotch, cherry and banana.

"There are limits to one's appetite even in the U.S." Thirty-two million Americans believe in astrology. There are 1,500 newspapers published in this country and 1,250 of them with astrological columns while hardly any of them publish book reviews. "Is this marginal or is this central? I don't know. If I wanted to use some of these things in a novel, who would believe me? Many would think it was science-fiction. The spread of the collective imagination is difficult to assess, difficult to pin down.

And at times pathetic. Think how little it takes to be an original man. "What do you do in a culture that dismisses the individualistic nature?" At 43, Kosinski's individualistic and ironic nature has been a significant part of the American intellectual mainstream for more than 10 years. It began with the publication of his first novel, "The Painted Bird," and continued through "Steps," "Being There," "The Devil Tree" and most recently "Cockpit." On the 10th anniversary of its publication, "The Painted Bird" is being reissued by Houghton Mifflin Co. in a new edition with a special afterword by Kosinski.

It is also an irony not for one moment lost on its author a Book of the Month selection. In November, Bantam will issue a boxed edition of all five of his novels, calling them the complete works of Jerzy Kosinski and inspiring Kosinski to insist "But I'm not through yet!" Kosinski spent the better part of World War II as a child, alone and wandering throughout Poland, surviving whatever the cost, going on to be educated both in Poland and the Soviet Union, finally taking advantage of his vast knowledge of the Eastern European bureauracy to escape to the West, starting as an adult to learn the English language. "In America," he says, "you can keep running forever. The highways have bypasses you can keep on going and never arrive. Asked by one of the students if he had any hope, any optimism at all, Kosinski, with a smile, replied: "In my mind my past is always worse than my present.

So in a way I'm very hopeful." Early on in his lecture he welcomed his audience as "a secret society of readers," citing a Gallup poll that reported that 58 of the American public in the last five years had not read a book and a Wall Street firm's leisure-time study that reported television viewing occupied 1,200 hours or 45.3 of the American leisure time each year SUN 6 15 I 18 18 15 United Artists pg: PACIFIC 1 VERMONT OOIVE-IW TM1ATIH I 6 30 8 IS 10 15 I nil 4'. 411 I.
