8. 1976 los 3ngtltf JDllttS Baltimore Bombs San Diego, 37-21 SAN DIEGO GP) Baltimore quarterback Bert Jones threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns Sunday to lead the Colts to a 37-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers. The Colts, 8-1 and atop the AFC East, rolled to a 21-7 halftime lead behind Jones' passing, and had the game well in hand the rest of the way. Jones, who hit 18 of 25 passes and had one interception, put the Colts in front early with a 40-yard scoring toss to Lydell Mitchell in the first quarter. In the second period, after Don McCauley scored from two yards out to make it 14-0, Jones connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Roger Carr.

The Jones-Carr combination clicked again early in the third quarter, this time on an 18-yard scoring pass to give Baltimore a 28-7 advantage. SCORE BY QUARTERS 91; Leaks 10-33; McCauley 1-31. His 90.91 (20 of 22) against Pittsburgh in 1974 is a record. And earlier this year, his attempt qualified him for the all-time best efficiency rating of about 85.

But the statistic Anderson remembers most is this: under him the Bengals have lost both their playoff games 34-18 to Miami in 73 and 31-28 to Oakland last year. "I'm very proud of the passing championships, but they don't win football games," said Anderson, who this season has a new head coach in Bill Johnson (Brown, the 10-year-old Bengals' only other coach moved to general manager after 41 years of coaching). "In the past we've lived and died with the pass. But this year we're not throwing the ball as much, and we have better balance with our running game which is how you win football games. "My one goal is to win a world championship.

If you'll notice, the quarterbacks of the most successful teams aren't rated in the top four or five passers." This season, the 6-2 Bengals are two games ahead in the AFC Central division. Though Anderson has hit 111-185 60) for 1,245 yards and 11 touchdowns, factors such as his eight interceptions (he had 11 all last year) have brought his efficiency rating down to 81.9, sixth in the AFC. On the field, Anderson is an extension of Brown, precise, craftsmanlike and unspectacular. He prides himself on making the perfect decision be it a bomb to wide receiver Isaac Curtis or a flare to running back Lenvil Elliottand executing the throw with textbook form. He scrambles only when the defense allows it.

Interceptions on gambling heaves are wholly unacceptable. New Bengals quarterback coach Boyd Dowler, a former Green Bay Packer great, compares Anderson favorably with Bart Starr in every category throwing range, accuracy, decision-making, pain tolerance, athletic ability, on-the-field leadership-except one. "Bart won five world championships," says Dowler. "That's the ultimate judgment of excellence for a quarterback." Anderson knows that only too well. But lately he's gotten his fill of hearing about Ken Anderson, the quarterback who's known best for not being known.

For his first five seasons, he was more or less content to hear Paul Brown say: "Ken Anderson is Americana at its best. He handles the fame like a well-educated man would." But he's been increasingly disturbed when he reads statements like these from teammates: "If Ken were more outgoing he'd be a household name by now" center Bob Johnson. "You can't blame the town. It's Ken's personality. It's the way he wants it" tight end Bob Trumpy.

But maybe it hasn't been so much how Anderson wanted it, but how it had to be. Anaheim (714) 750-201 SAIEI-LEASWC-ALL MAKES 10101 W. Wltfllltti. ClMrCltl 213559-4600 are called by the coaches, prospers because of the well designed Paul Brown offense in which he is surrounded by good blockers and receivers and frequently dumps the ball off to his backs. Of the record 20 of 22, 18 were flipped to backs.

This year, Anderson is averaging 6.73 yards per completion, while the Rams' James Harris is averaging 9.85. Anderson was asked if any NFL quarterback could step into the Cincinnati offense and soon look like an all-time great. "Maybe," he said. "But I have a lot of confidence in my ability. I don't see anybody any better in football.

I think I could go to other teams and have a lot of success. "And the play-calling question is a tough one. If I say I like for them to be called, I look like a quarterback without any initiative. If I say I don't like it, I'm bucking the system. But if I ever got to call my own, I think I could call as a good a game as anyone in the league." But as long as Anderson plays in Cincinnati, he knows he probably won't.

Just as he knows he won't be worshipped as the local idol nor will he be paid like one. Anderson still refuses to let an agent help him with his contract negotiations. "I guess I'd make a lot of money if I did," he said with another dash of sarcasm. "But no, really, they've been very good to me considering the circumstances. "They could bring another quarterback in here and they'd still sell tickets.

But take an O. J. Simpson they have 80,000 a game in Buffalo and he puts an extra 30,000 in the stands. He's worth more money." Still, a little national attention wouldn't hurt the ego within. "Last weekend," said his father, Eric, who with his wife, drives to every Cincinnati home game, "he said to me, 'You know, I think I'm finally getting a little national On tonight's coast-to-coast telecast, Ken Anderson hopes to get a little more.

Paul Brown liked his size (6-2, 210 pounds) and his throwing potential, and was especially intrigued by Anderson's attitude, 3.34 grade point average and price tag. Bill Walsh, a former Cincinnati quarterback coach now with San Diego, remembers Anderson the rookie vividly. fl "He was totally a raw, green football player," says Walsh, a Los Angeles native. "Augustana couldn't stand up to any of the L.A. city high schools in football.

But the best thing Ken did was immediately move to Cincinnati, and he signed within a week without an agent or all that negotiating business. "He was so eager that we worked by the hour. And since we had the other quarterbacks, we didn't have to throw him right in like other teams did with John Reaves and Dan Pas-torini, who have never really panned out." Tom Callahan, columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer, figures Anderson had plenty of horse sense. "Ken is very nice and very boring a horrible interview," says Callahan, "but I think he was astute enough to come in and size up immediately what Paul Brown wanted in a quarterback." From the start, Anderson never really found himself in circumstances conducive to coming out of his shell. When injuries to town darlings Cook and Carter gave him his chance, it took two years to eliminate the boos.

"I had to learn to let the boos go in one ear and out the other," said Anderson, whose new bride Bonnie suffered in the stands. "And sure, I like the team and the town and I wanted to stay, so I didn't buck the system." As a result, Anderson grew about All Makes. All Models. Earliest Delivery.
