m. The Editor Speaks-Is Spelling Improving? Each year Mason City High School has one special objective among its many objectives. This year spelling is being stressed. One often hears adults complain, "Schools don't teach spelling as well as they used to." "has whiskers on it," according to Ernest Horn, State University of Iowa spelling specialist. "We are doing a better job with more pupils than was done 50 years ago," explained Horn.

To prove 'this fact, a principal in Springfield, found some old spelling examinations in his attic. He resurrected them and gave the words to his classes in recent years. The progress made between the years is remarkable. With Mason City High School doing its part, the employers in this vicinity should get some good spellers in the future. The better spellers, however, as Horn points out, probably will go to college and may be out of the local employment market.
