outdoors at KPFK's Int'l Festival CL Adobe, Calabasas wood TV Theater productions as routine weekly shows rather than giving them the special treatment they deserve. A case in point is tonight's presentation of George Kel-ley's "The Fatal Weakness" (Channel 28 -at 9) with Eva Marie Saint in the role created 30 years ago on Broadway by Ina Claire. The play has historical significance because it was Kelly's last play before he turned away from the American theater in disgust. Yet is competes tonight with the opening chapter of NBC's Best Sellers "Captainsjmd the Kings," plus the debut of the new Nancy Walker comedy, a two-hour Hawaii Five-0 episode, the introduction of Mike Douglas' replacement on Streets of San Francisco. It is-really idiotic programing on a network where quality American product is so scanty.

The play, which Miss Saint will take on tour is a very old fashioned kind of theater in which Kelly, with a velvet scalpel, expertly reveals the inner workings of some ill y1 Ajfcfc GOOD SEATS AVAILABLE FOR ALL PERFORMANCES! It's the theater of language, once the glory of the stage but a rare bird today. What Kelly gives us and Miss Saint plays beautifully is a fragile, ethereal kind of woman, who has been married 24 years, has a married daughter and a grandson, and who floats in organdy and silk about a fine house with a uniformed maid. She is also an incurable romantic. When she discovers the traditional anonymous note that her handsome husbsnd (John McMartin) is having a fling with a woman osteopath, she turns detective with the willing help of other woman eager to catch a straying husband.

She literally makes a dossier on his infidelity, not so much as evidence against him as for the sheer romance of it. In fact, she thrills to each new detail of her husband's romance. Meanwhile, her spirited, liberated daughter Penny (Gretchen Corbett) is having her own problems with her husband because she believes marriage is "arrested development" that she refuses to take seriously, declaring she sees "no reason to stop growing simply because you're married." But when she discovers her parents are in the same boat, she's horrified, turns on her mother and defends the traditional vows for a marriage that has lasted 24 years. Her parents' rift sends her back to her husband. The confrontation between McMartin and Miss Saint is an elegant scene, a jewel under producer Norman Lloyd's direction.

And the final romantic act you must see for yourself. Bv TV's machine-gun standards, the play is slow and talky, its pace methodical, its playing exquisite. There's even a brief postscript on the life and art of George Kelly in an interview with his niece and heir Princess Grace of takes you into the world of wines. and all Mutual Agencies MUSIC CENTER DOROTHY CHANDLER.
