W. Gasswint. Late Snack at Decatur House Ready By JANE EADS WASHINGTON Mrs. Truxton Rcale didn't get invited to the White House diplomatic reception this year as in the past. Just the same, she revived a custom begun in 1912 of inviting the diplomat over to her house afterwards for a late snack.

The elegant and very social mistress of historic Decatur House across Lafayette Park from the White House, was not being singlet out for a snubbing. No one else from residential society was askec to the reception either. a by Gaslight Despite the lateness of the hour--it was after 2 when the party at the executive mansion broke up--she was still the gracious hostess in her own 19th Century drawing room, which still has the orginal gaslight fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Guests found something at Mrs. Beale's they didn't gel at the White House --a drink and a hot meal.

Decatur House was inherited by Mrs. Beale's late husband, the former minister to Iran and Greece. It was built in 1818 by Stephen Decatur from a federal grant derived from the sale of Barbary pirate ships which the great American naval hero captured. Being Restored Mrs. Beale got pretty huffy some years back when people, seeing workmen climbing over the place, it was getting a face- being modernized.

It was in reality being restored to its original plans. These plans, conceived by Benjamin H. Latrobe, who introduced classical revival in architecture this country, were found in an antique shop here in 1937, just about the time Mrs. Beale was urg- the government to endow the house as a national shrine. The Interior Department has recognized as such and given her a large document to that effect, but it is still her property and she pays taxes on if.

For Preservation She has had many opportunities sell, but last May she provided her will, made public at a cocktail party, that the house and part of its contents and a fund for TO WED IN and Mrs. L. D. Wiest, 711 15th Place N. announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Lee, to Donald A.
