neighbouring tnens at aneuil Hall in faid Bofton on Monday the 2fb cf November fiine t'cloci Bl and continued by ad journment to the next day for the purpofe ofpyni fulling advifing and determining upon th: mojl proper and effectual method to prevent the unload ing receiving or vending the detfflable TEA fent out by the Eaft I ndia Company part cf which Being juf arrived in our harbour JN order to proceed with due regularity it was moved that a Moderator be chofen and A TH AN WILLIAMS Esq Was then chofen Moderator of the meeting i A 0 I 0 was made that as the town XA of Bofton had determined at a late meeting legally aflembled that they would to the utmoft of their power prevent the landing of the Tea the queftion be put Whether this body are abfo I lately determined that the Tea now arrived in a Capt Hall fliall be returned to the place from 5 whence it come at all events And the queftion L' beingput it pafted in the affirmative Nem Con It apowriog thet the Hall could not contain all I the people uwmbled it was voted that the meet inp baimmdiauly adjourned to the Old South Meeting Houlc having been obtained for this purpofe The people met at the Old South accordingto adjournment A motion was m'ule and the queftion put viz Whether it is the firm refolution of this body that the Tea lhal I not only be feut back but that no duty fliall be paid thereon and in the affirmative nem con It was moved that in order to give time to the conGgnces to confider and deliberate before they fent in their proposals to this body as they had given reafon to expefl would have been done at the opening of the meeting theremight bean adjourn ment to three arid the meeting was accordingly for that purpofe adjourned THREE met according to adjournment A motion was made 1 Whether the Tea now arrived in Captain Ihip ffiall be fent back in the fame bottom in the affirmative nem con Mr Rotch the owner of the veflel being pre fect informed the body that he Ihould enter his proteft againft their proceedings It was then moved and voted nem con That Mr Rotch be directed not to enter this Tea and that the doing of it would be at his peril Alfo voted That Captain Hall the Mailer of the ihip be informed that at his petil he is not i to fuffcr any of the Tea brought by him to be i landed A motion was made That in order for the fe curity of Captain Hall's ihip and cargo a watch maybe appointed and it was voted that a watch may be accordingly appointed to conlift of 25 men Capt Edwajd Proflor was appointed by the body to be the Capt of the watch for this night and the names were given in to the Moderator of the townfmen who were volunteers on the oc tafioh It having been obferved to the body that Go Vernor Hutchinfon had required the Juftices of the Peace in this town to meet and ufe their endea vours to fupprefs any routs or riots of the jf people that might happen It was moved and the queftion Whether it be not the fenfe of this meeting that the condufl herein carries a defigned refleflion upon the people here met and is folcly calculated to ferve the views of Adminiftration Palled in the affirmative nem I con The people being informed by Col Hancock that Mr Copley fdn in Iaw to Mr Clarke fen had acquainted him that the Tea Confignees did receive their letters from London till laft evening and were fo difperfeJ that they could not have a joint meeting early enough to make their propofals at the time intended and there fore were defirous of a further fpace for that pur pofe The meeting out of great tendernefs to thefe petfons and from a ftrong defire to bring this mat ter to a ccricluliun notwithftanding the time they had hitherto expended upon them to no purpofe were prevailed upon to adjourn to the next morn iog nine 1 Tuefday Morning 9 3 Met according to adjournment The long expefled propofals Were at length 53 brought into the meeting not direfled to the Mode rator but to John Scollay Elq one of the Sclefl nen was however voted that the fame ihould I be read and they are as fuiiow viz ther they accordingly now require the fame which pafled in the affirmative nem con Mr Rotch then informed the meeting that he fliould proteft againft the whole proceedings as he had done againft the proceedings on yefterday but that though the returning the Tea is an involunta ry afl in him he yet confiders himfelfas under a neceffity to do it and ihall therefore comply with the requirement of this body Capt Hall being prelent was forbid to aid or af lift in unloadingthe Tea at his peril and ordered that if he continues Maftcr of the veflel he carry the fame back to London who repjicd he Ihould comply with their requirements Upon motion Refolved that John Rowe Efq owner of part of Capt fliipexpefled with Tea as alfo Mr Timmins faflor'forCapt brig be defired to attend Mr Ezekiel Chever was appointed Capt of the watch for this night aoda fufficient numberofvo lunteers gave io their names for that fervice VOTED That the Captain of this watch be defired to make out a lift of the watch for the next night and fo each Captain of the watch for the following nights until the veflels leave the harbour Upon a motion made Voted That in cafe it Ihould happen that the watch fliould be any ways moleftcd in the night while on duty they give the alarm to the inhabitants by the tolling of the bells and that if any thing happens in the day time the alarm be by ringing of the bells VOTED That fix perfons be appointed to be in rcadinefs to give due notice to the country towns when they Ihall be required fo to do up on any important occafion And fix perfons were accordingly chofen for that purpofe John Rowe Efq attended and was informed that Mr Rotch had engaged that his veflel fliould cany back the Tea lhe brought in the fame bot tom and that it was the expectation of this body that he does the fame by the Tea expefled in Capt Bruce whereupon he replied that the Ihip was Under thecate of the faid Maftcr but that he would ufe ins utmoft endeavour that it fliould go back as required by this body and that he would giv immediate advice of the arrival of faid flop VOTED That it is the fenfe of this body that Capt Bruce fliall on his arrival ftriflly con form to the votes pafled relpcfling Capt veflel as though they had been all palled in refer ence to Capt Ihip Mr Tirrimins appeared and informed that Capt brig expefled with Tea was owned in Nantucket he gave his word of honour that no Tea fliould be landed while flic was under his care nor touched by any one until the arrival It was then voted That what Mr Rowe and Mr Timmins had offered was fatisfaflory to the body Mr Copley returned and the body that as he had been obliged to go to? Ctfle he hoped that if he had exceeded the time allowed him they would confider the difficulty of a paflage by water at this feafon as his apology He then further acquainted the body that he had feen all the Confignees and he had convinced them that they might attend this meeting with fafety and had ufed his utmoft endeavours to prevail up on them togive fatisfaflion to the body they ac quainted him that believing nothing would be fatisfaflory fliort of rc lhipping the Tea which was out of their pewer they thought it belt not to appear but would renew their propofal of fto ring the Tea and fubmitting the fame to the in fpeflion of a Committee and that they could go no further without incurring their own ruin but as they bad not been aflive in introducing the Tea they Ihould do nothing to obftrufl the people in their procedure with the fame It was then moved and the queftion putWhe ther the return made by Mr Copley from the Confignees be in the leaft degree fatisfaflory to this body and pafled in the negative Nem Con Whereas a number of Bierchants in this province have inadvertently imported'Tea fromGreat Britain while it is fubjecl to the payment of a Duty impofed upon it by an Adi of the Britifo Parliament for the purpofe of raiji ng a Revenue in America and appro priating the fame without the conjent of thofe who are required topay it RE SO LV That in thus importing faid Tea they have juftly incurred the difplealure of our brethren in the other colonies And Refolved further That if any perfon or perfons fliall hereafter impoit Tea from Great Britain orif any Maftcr or Mailers of any veflel or veflels in Great Britain fliall take the fame on board to be imported to this place until the faid unrighteous Art fliall be repealed he or they fliall be deemed by this Body' an enemy to his country and we will prevent the landing and fale of the fame and the payment of any Duty thereon And we will i f'efl the return thereof to the place from whence it fliall come 0 That are pointing their deftruflive machines againft the facred liberties of the Americans thd eyes of all Europe are upon us and much is ex pefled from the known refolution and condufl of the Pennfylvanians amongft whom the indnftrious and refpeflablehodyof Tradesmen and Mecha nics bear a very large proportion The point in' queftion is Whether we have property of our own or not Whether otir property and the dear earned fruits of onr labour are at otlr own difpofal or fliall be wantonly wrefted from us by a let of luxurious abandoned and piratical hirelings to be appropriated by them to incretfe the number nf fuch infamous penfioners and fupport their unli mited extravagance TJie rel'ult depends on out determined virtue and integrity at fo important a crifis The nature of the deteftalile A and the pernicious confcqucnces of fubmitting to receive it amongft us fubjefl to a duty payable here and levied on us without our confent have been fo judicioufly fet forth and dmonftrated by abler pens as to leave no room for one of my ca pacity to undertake it and it the trifling duty of three fence were only to be conlidered it would not be worth our while tooppofeit nor and begged leave of the Moderator that a fetter he had received from the Governor requiring him to read a Proclamation to the people here af f'mbled might be read and it was accordingly read Whereupon it was moved and the queftion put Whether the Sheriff fliould he permitted to read the which pafled in the affiiiu tive nem con The Proclamation is as follows viz Uy die Governor To Jonathan Williams Efq acting as Mo derator of an aflembly of people in the town of Bofton and to the people fo aflemblcd JfAH ERE AS printed notifications were on Mon day tfe2()th infant pofed in divers places in th townof Bojion and publifaed in the News Pa pers of that day calling upon the people to affemblc to gether for certain unlawful purpofes in fuch notifica tions mentioned: And whereas great numbers of peo ple belonging to the town of Bofon and divers others belonging to feveral other towns in the province did ajfemhle in the faid townof Bofon on the faid cry and did then and there proceed to chufe a Moderator and to confult delate and refolve upon ways and means for carrying fuch unlawful purpofes into exe cution openly violating defyingand fitting at nought the good and who lefime laws of the province and the confitutitn rf government under which they live And whereas the people thus affemhled did vote or agree to adjourn or continue their meeting to this the yth infant and great numbers of them are again met or affemhled together for the like purpofes in the faid town of Bofon In faithfutnefs to my truf and as his Majefiy's Reprefintative within the province lam bound to bear tefimony againf this violation of the laws and I warn exhort and require you and each of you thns un lawfully affembled forthwith to difperfi and to farceafi all further unlawful proceedings
