BY DUREEN CORSELLO Helen Smith, police clerk for the Dolton police dept, recently attended a seminar for policewomen at Robert Allerton Park in Monticello.

She received a certificate of participation in the seminar sponsored by the International Assn. of Women Police and the Police Training Institute of the University of HI. For three days the policewo-1 men listened to experts lecture on the challenges facing women who enter police training. Dr. Lois L.

Higgins, director of the Chicago Crime Prevention Bureau, and president of the International Assn. of Women Police, said policewomen were used in protective work with young girls during World War II, and many communities like Dolton are now utilizing women police officers. "The right of women offenders and young girls to be interrogated by police officers of their own sex is becoming recognized as an important aspect of enlightening public policy," she said. Irvin K. Juergensmeyer, educational and research consult- ant revealed that 1,000 policewomen are needed in the State of Illinois and that every city with a population of 5,000 or more should have a policewoman as Dolton does, for they work especially well with juvenile problems.

Dolton has three other women police officers, Lois Hoffenba- cher, Norene Flynn and Dorothy Helms. They will take part in other instructive seminars relating to their work. Helen returned to her duties as a member of Dolton's police department issued by the Chicago Commission on Youth Welfare. They are: 1.
