The Gazette and Daily, York, Saturday Morning, August 24, York Drops 15-8 Nod To Triplets After Copping Suspended Tilt, 2-1 Heavyweight Champion Performs In Stockholm Stockholm, 'fiwfvlpn im- a crowd of 18,000 paid $1.40 apiece for the honor of witnessing the European debut of world heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston Friday night, but instead of pulverizing sparmates as promised, all the champ did was punch a sandbag, skip rope and fight his own shadow. Sonny was welcomed with cheers, but that soon turned to silence when all Liston did for an encore was crack a few jokes. The crowd, short of the record 20,000 that greeted Floyd Patterson a few years ago, was lured by promises of the champ doing battle. Liston was wearing red and green tights, and the colored lights shining on the ring erected on the amusement park stage made the champ look like a sinister Santa Claus as he went through his paces to the tune of "Night Train." The: champ then showed the crowd his champion belt from Ring Magazine, let trainer Willie Reddish pound him in the stomach with a medicine ball and promptly ended the show. The crowd was still courteous, but handily cordial.
