The site will be the Recreation Park Clubhouse, 300 E. Pine El Segundo, the regular meeting place of the Segundo Chess Club. The club will host the festivities in behalf of the Southern California Chess League. A number of well known masters and experts will play simultaneously or give lectures on chess at intervals all day starting at 10 a.m. A team match between groups designated as Yankees and Rebels will start at 4 p.m.

Many of the same players will then compete in the Southern California Rapid Transit Championship, set for 7:30 p.m., with games at a much faster tempo. Each year the SCCL awards a plaque to denote election to the Chess Hall of Fame to an individual for outstanding service to chess in Southern California. The award cere-. mony will be held at 2 p.m. Morphy Day is meant particularly for people who know the game but have little or no idea of how chess clubs or organizations function.

By observing or partici- pating in the events they will learn a little more of an excellent form of enjoyment. Every high school and junior high school in the area can enter one player, who must be certified by the school as its chess champion. The high school division will contest six rounds starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 24.

Four rounds will be completed that day and the final two on Sunday. The junior high school entrants will play a separate tournament of five rounds, to be completed Saturday. The tournament is sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, 400 N. Bundy L.A. 90049, which has had the development of chess for youth one of its major objectives.

Schools which have not yet entered the tournament, or desire further Information regarding the event, should write to the foundation. Grant High School scored 1814 points out of a possible 20 to win the 18th annual Los Angeles City High School Championship. This was a. team event, with the combined scores of the top four players used as a total for a school Monro was second with a score of 16-4. Gardena and the host school, Hamilton, tied for third with 15-5.
