Formsnek BLACK CHESS SAIDY EARNS TITLE IN VENICE TOURNEY Pal Benko of New York and Dr. Anthony Saidy of Los Angeles have been making the rounds of tournaments in Europe for some months. Their motives are quite different. For Benko, an established international grandmaster, playing tournament chess is the practice of his profession.

In addition, he must go to Europe to see his bride, a Hungarian girl whom he married last year but cannot yet bring to the United States. Saidy, who had entered the medical career, had one over-riding ambition, to gain an International chess title. To do so, he practically had to go to Europe. Titles are awarded for successful performances in major tournaments, which must have grandmasters from several countries and meet other qualifications as a test of strength. Such events are a rarity in the United States.

After a number of attempts, with some close calls on previous occasions, Saidy fi nally made it last month a tournament in Venice, Italy. He is now established as an international master. The grandmaster title is still in the future. The tournament, the third annual grandmaster event in Venice, was a great victory for Vlastimil Hort of Czechoslovakia, who won eight games and drew seven for a final score of IWi-ZVi. Saidy and Benko were in a multiple tie for second through seventh places, with scores of 9Vfe-5V.

The others with the same total were Levente Lengyel of Hungary, Karl Robatsch of Austria, White Mark Taimanov of the USSR and S. Tatai of Italy. For Saidy, as indicated above, the result was a triumph. He won seven games, more than anyone but Hort, lost three and drew five. He gained four points against the seven grandmasters in the tournament.

Two Yugoslavs were close behind the tied group, Milan Matulovic with 9-6 and Boris-lav Ivkov with 8-6V. Other plus scores were turned in by Antonio Medina of Spain and Wolfgang Unzicker of West Germany, each with 8-7.
