Director Matt Cimber has created an ambience of suspense and captured the claustrophobic, compulsive world of Nevada's mobsters and gamblers. The film is well-photographed and the acting, a little off key in the beginning, later becomes credible and sympathetic.

Playing with "Lady Cocoa" in most billings is "The Candy Tangerine Man," a blaxploitation flick with plenty of racism, foul language, street humor, explicit violence and an ambitious premise that doesnt quite work. A respectable salesman (John Daniels) owns a house in the suburbs where he mows the lawn, has two kids and a lovely, faithful wife (Tracy King), but he leads a double life. Daniels is also one of the most powerful pimps around the Hollywood and Sunset Strip area. He wears outlandish clothes, drives a red and yellow Rolls-Royce and buys and sells women like horses. His business partner (Marva Farmer) also runs a sauna-massage parlor.

The movie moves amidst the dank and desolate world of addicts, prostitutes and pimps with credibility, concern THE CANDY TANGERINE MAN1 A Matt Clmber Production. A Moonstone Films release. Producer, director. Matt Cimber. Script George Theakos.

Running time: 1 15 min. MPAA-rated: (those under 17 must be accompanied by parent or adult guardian). and sometimes too much explicitness. Portrayals by Miss Farmer, Tom Hankerson and Eli Haynes are noteworthy. George Theakos' attempt to make his Daniels character work on two levels doesn't quite come off Daniels is too credible as a pimp to be believable as a respected family man: Matt Cimber directs with energy and competence.

Harry Woolman's special effects are eye-boggling and Ken Gibb's photography is dramatic and effective. LINDA GROSS A laemmit Theatre 1122 No. Vermont 664-2169 comms nov.
