It's interesting to think about what might have happened though." What might have happened is that Joe Paterno, the American Football Coaches Assn. University Division Coach of the Year, might have become the head coach at USC. Sound improbable? It Isn't when you know the circumstances.

Jess Hill retired as USC coach after the 1956 season to become the Trojan athletic director. Hill wanted one man as his successor. He wanted Rip Engle, the man who had achieved a position of national prominence at Penn State. Hill offered the job to Engle. Engle Unsure "Rip wasn't very sure about it," said Paterno.

"I think he wanted to go, but at the same time he wanted to stay at Penn State. He finally decided on a way to make the decision. "He put it to a vote of his assistant coaches and that included me. He had planned to take us all along. The vote was 7-1 to stay at Penn State.

I was the Rip Engle retired as Penn State's coach after the 1965 season. The heir apparent was Paterno. "I guess it's not unreasonable to assume that the same thing might have happened out here," he said. "Either that or I would have turned into a fat well-tanned beach boy."
