They saw the other half, Laver, win in '68 and 70. And they saw Ashe have his days in '63 and again in 75, when the tournament moved to UCLA to accommodate more people and cars.

The L.A. Tennis Club was never exactly enamored of women except, of course, the movie queens who'd flash a leg while posing for publicity shots but female players had their moments, too. Arnold won in 1930, '34 and '35; Betz in '42, '44 and '46; Connolly in '51 and '52; Gibson in '56 and '57; Beverly Baker Fleitz in '55, '58 and '59 and King in 67 and '69. Women, in fact, were responsible for the tournament's most embarrassing incident. In 1971, during the singles final, King and her friend and doubles partner, Rosie Casals, walked off the court ostensibly because of a beef against a linesperson but actually in protest over the drastically unequal prize money paid women.

A year later something called the Virginia Slims reared its head and women's tennis was never the same. Nor was it the same at the Southwest. That year, 1971, marked the last appearance of top-ranked women. "I was as embarrassed as if it had been my own daughters," said tournament director Joe Bixler, who has seen all but two Southwests. "I just wanted to sink and hide." The King-Casals affair, which produced complaints of "second-class citizenship" and accusations that the club was run by "old fogies" who treated all women like "nice little girls," was but one of many memorable episodes in 48 years.

From Times files and conversations with Bixler and other longtime Southwest observers, here are some others: In 1935 a Czech named Roderick Menzel got to the final against Budge, No. 1 in the world. Playing brilliantly, Menzel won the first set, 6-1. Then Budge won the next two, 11-9 and 6-3. At that time the men's final was three-out-of-five, and after the third set players got a 10-minute rest.

Budge grabbed a towel and headed for the locker room. Menzel grabbed a towel and everything else he had with him and started in the same direction: Perry Jones, tournament director for more than a quarter of a century, called to Menzel, who stopped. "Mr. Menzel," Jones said, "the match is not over." "Who, Mr. Jones," Menzel replied, "would you say is the better player, me or Budge?" "Well," Jones said, "if you put it that way, Mr.

Menzel, Mr. Budge, of course." "Well," Menzel said, "I think so, too." And with that Menzel left the court and Los Angeles. The score in the record book reads, "Budge 1-6, 11-9, 6-3, def. (default)." Also in the mid-30s, a couple of local players, Elsie Gable and Ida Schnall, returned to the tournament desk from a match on one of the club's back courts, where they had played alone since there weren't enough umpires and linespeople to go around. Both were terribly angry.

Because both claimed to have won the first set, 6-0. The official referee, a proper, flawlessly-dressed British actor named Crawford Kent, was called in. He asked each woman who won the first set, and neither changed her story. Never losing his cool, Kent finally said: "Ladies, take three balls and go back for your third set. The match stands at one set apiece." If you're interested in an honest and intelligent approach to hair replacement, see us.

There is a difference and we've got itl FOLLICLE BIONICS Suite 1207 10880 Wilshire L.A., Cal. (213) 879-9990 In 1928 the Frenchman, Cochet, then No. 1, was to play a local junior in the first round and, assuming he won, a Pasadena pro, Everett Smith, in the second. But Cochet had slightly mistimed that 12-day trip and arrived a day late. So tournament director Jones phoned him at the Ambassador Hotel to notify him he'd have to play the junior at noon and Smith at 3.

"Mr. Jones," Cochet said, "I never play before 2 o'clock. So I won't be there until then." Not wanting to alienate Cochet, who was the best of the few foreign stars the Southwest was then importing, Jones sought out the junior and said, as kindly as he could: "Son, you are defaulted. Per my phone conversation with him, Mr. Cochet just advanced to the second round." Ellsworth Vines rallied in the last two sets to defeat Fred Perry in the 1931 final.

At a banquet Vines, who won Wimbledon the following year, was asked to explain his court tactics. "I hit the serve as hard as I can to one corner," he said. "If I miss, I hit the second serve as hard as I dare to the other corner. Receiving, I hit the first ball as hard as I can to one corner and the second ball as hard as I dare to the other corner." "And then what, Ellie?" the master of ceremonies asked. "Then, sir," Vines replied, "the point is over." Before Menzel's walkout in the '35 final, Budge beat Dr.

Gerald Bar-tosh in the quarter-finals. The same Dr. Bartosh who a few days earlier had treated Budge for a sprained neck. After their match a Times story said: "The good doctor wasn't obligated to get Budge back in shape, particularly when he had to face the redhead in the quarters, but he was a good Samaritan, anyway, and see what he got a three-set licking. Some guys have no conscience at all." Those were the days.

Now if this reminds you of nowadays: In 1968 Ashe was on the phone with a Playboy Bunny moments before a match against Emerson. Ashe told her he didn't think it would take too long and that he'd be ready for their date at such and such time. Please Turn to Page 7.
