Somewhat extraceously, tad in postseriptal fash-ion, "Twisted Nerve' brings up the much-discussed chromosome theory of criminal behavior, but its strongest point is to show how vulnerable normal, open people are to the clever psychopath and, in turn, how threatening is their very normality to him. This is driven home by Boulting's flawless performers, of whom the most notable are Billie White-law (who will be remembered as Albert Finney's wife in "Charlie as Miss Mills', sensible yet sensuous mother and Barry Foster as her crass star boarder. ft house in contrast to Bennett's gorgeous but gloomy Adamesque mansion.

No Hitchcock, Roy Boulting relies more on the fine screenplay he has written with Leo Marks than his camera, but as usual he comes through with an intelligent, satisfying film. Truly Terrifying Indeed, that "Twisted Nerve" is so. truly terrifying is it. builds with such total credibility. Everthing anyone says or does is always believable.

Wisely, Boulting adheres to two timeless rules for creating horror: (1) nothing is quite so scary as the monstrous act that takes place in an everyday domestic setting; (2) that which is left to the imagination of the viewer is infinitely more hideous than the sympathetic Mist Mills, who persuades the manager to drop the matter. Bennett goes home to his sweetly possessive mother (Phyllis Calvert) and his gruff but well-meaning father (Frank Finlay). A subsequent argument between the two men results in. an ultimatum to Bennett, who's just been sent down from Oxford, from Finlay: Take a job in France that he'll set up for him or get out. Bennett is amazingly compliant but instead of heading for Paris he looks up Miss Mills.

No more of the plot can be revealed without spoiling the show. "Twisted Nerve" was made by England's Boult-ing Brothers, whose last film was "The Family Way," which also starred Miss Mills and Bennett. Like that warm comedy-drama, this film is absolutely perfect in its cast and settings Miss Mills' cheery Victorian boarding 11 MOVIES HELL'S BELLES," various theaters. I AM PABLO NERUDA." A BY KEVIN THOMAS tStadwmw "Twisted Nerve" (at the Beverly Hills) proves that it is still possible to make a thoroughly engrossing, spine-tingling suspense picture that turns upon the derangement of its central character without exploiting his deadly deeds for cheap sensation- alism. Yet there's no two ways about it: This fellow (played superlatively by Hywel Bennett) is a raving maniac.

An Ultimatum One day at a department store Bennett steals a toy duck and is caught.
