Browne, who is the current California titleholder, finished in second place with a final tally of 4-1. Schutt tied with George Hunnex and Julius Loftsson, each scoring California Junior Champion Jim Tarjan, who had been one of the favorites, tied at 3-2 with Jim Lazos, Carl Pilnick and George Saidi. Tarjan lost to Peter Rhee and Arthur Spiller. Henin, Hunnex, Loftsson and Schutt qualified for the finals of the State Championship Tournament, to be held in San Francisco in December. In the Class section, which also included unrated players, the winners were W. Leigh Hunt and Robert La Bre, who tied with 4V64. There were 19 players in this group. The tournament was under the auspices of the Southern California Chess League, and directed by Gordon Barrett.
