five-sided English folk-based group comprising two of the folk genre's most enthusiastically acclaimed guitarists, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, plus singer Jacqul McShee, acoustic bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox, are in the midst of a week-long Troubadour They've been inspiring everything from wild adulation to pronounced indifference, both of which are derstandable, judging from their Thursday evening set. Pentangle, see, makes absolutely no extra-musical attempt to entice its audiences either one is bowled over by its collective virtuosity or left frigid by its distance from its audiences, whom it acknowledges either infrequently or not at all, inaudibly in either case. Sitting very still and apparently completely en-grossed in producing the precise, evenly textured, almost sterile sound that characterizes its recordings, the group can strike one as either wonderfully refreshing in this age of endless histrionics or oppressively dull. In a set that included such numbers as "Time Goes By," The Trees They Do Grow High" and "I Got- A Feelin'" Jansch and Renbourn were conspicuous only in their failure to display the sort of brilliance advance word would have led one to expect. Usually inaudible in the corners of the tiny club, they remained throughout very much in the background while Miss McShee stole the spotlight by default with her pretty unremarkable soprano.
