POPULAR RECORDS Voice Saves 'Elvis in Memphis- Black Limousine" and 1 nice (but a bit fast) remake of Chuck Jackson's "Any Day Now. The remainder of the album is worth hearing because of his voice, which seems to have arrived in Memphis even if no one else concerned with the LP did. down to grittlness. Elvis Presley la capable of being a great singer and the move to Memphis seems to have freed him of the crooner image which has dulled many of his records. His current hit, "In the Ghetto Is the stand-out track, followed by "Long rangements are Holly-woodish and the few simply-structured performances seem to spring more from laziness than deliberation on the part of the producer and arranger.

What saves the album, though, is Elvis voice, which has gotten back the ground, horns are scarce and generally insipid, the musical ar BY PETE JOHNSON Sound then were a heavy rhythmic base which barreled along relatively simple lines and an echoey wailing vocal. No horns, no back-up female chorus and (naturally) no string section, just lead, rhythm and bass guitars, an occasional pumping piano and drums. The Memphis Sound now is exemplified by Stax Records (Booker and the MGs, Carla Thomas, Albert King and in association with Atlantic Records Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam and Dave). 'From Elvis In Memphis- (RCA LSP-4155) is a partial concession to those who have been wishing that Presley would return to his rock-in' and rollin' ways. Although it pleases me more than any album he has released in the 1960s, it Is not quite the album I had hoped for and really has little to do with the Memphis Sound.

Elvis Presley's recording career began in the mid-503 in Memphis, where he was discovered by Sam Phillips of Sun Records. Sun Records prospered through an original mixture of country and western music and rhythm and blues belted out by a stable of artists which included Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. Rhythmic Base Presley was the most perfect practitioner of this kind of music. His voice could generate the intense power of blues but still project its subtle nuances and he was grounded enough in both country music and to fuse them into a new kind of rock 'n' roll. The predominant elements of the Memphis Little Inspiration Its hallmark Is still a heavy rhythmic base (furnished on about 80 of the Stax sessions by Booker and the MGs), but Stax has added a distinctive horn section, Jtt 4 CL f-v vx (4 i ---te 41 which replaces the ubi- quitous rhythm and blues girls chorus.

The instrumental component of a typical Stax record is still ultra-simple (in con trast to Motown, which goes for elaborate ar rangements). "From Elvis In Memphis" owes little inspiration either to Sun Records or to Stax.
