Landon today led in the popular vote in 28 President in 31, in the latest figures of the "grass roots" presidential poll of 3,000 rural newspapers being conducted in cooperation with Publishers Autocaster Service and the American Press, First returns were tabulated this week from Arkansas, Georgia and Vermont, making 39 states heard from thus far in the poll, which is covering only farms and small villages and towns. A total of 792,524 ballots have been counted. SO.Woseph Pochatko, 46 years old, of Bovard, an assistant mine foreman, a former resident of near Mount Pleasant, died suddenly Tuesday morning while at work in the Bovard mine. He leaves his wife, Mary, five children, two brothers and two sisters, including Mrs. Julia Stakovich of Buffington. Mr. Pochatko was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose at Mount Pleasant.

SLOAN FUNERAL The funeral service for John C. Sloan, retired Pennsylvania Railroad engineer of Huffsdale, who died Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Merle Kunselman, 1101 Burns street, Pittsburg, was held this afternoon at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Wilkinsburg. Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Mrs.

Margaret Sloan; one daughter, Mrs. Kunselman; one son, Gail Sloan, and three grandchildren. COUNTY PATRIOTIC MEETING OCTOBER 18 AT BAPTIST CHURCH A report approving the progress being made in the alleged third degree slaying of Frank C. Monaghan and complimenting Attorney General Charles J. Margiotti for his unqualified and non-partisan conduct ot the circumstances surrounding it was a highlight of the meeting of the Fayette County Federation of Secret Societies Tuesday night at Uniontown.

The report was made by the committee on law and order. Plans were advanced for the next patriotic mass meeting which will be held on Sunday afternoon, October 18, in the auditorium of the First Baptist Church in Connellsville. The speakers for this rally will be in charge of members of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. President D. A.

George Brindle and Samuel Brindle. George and Samuel are brothers of the deceased. RETIRED UNIONTOWN MERCHANT SUCCUMBS TO AUTO CRASH HURTS At the Theatres UNIONTOWN, Sept. N. (Dick) Craft, 84 years old, one of Uniontown's olde; and better known i retired merchants, died at 8:50 o'clock Tuesday night in Uniontown Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident June 3 50 miles south of Pcteisburg, while on his wjy to Florida with friends.

He suffered a fractured neck and contusions of his body, remaining in the Virginia hospital until June 21 when he was removed to the Jocal institution. Mr. Craft was born' Redstone townshnp October 26, 1852. a son of the late JameF W. and Caroline Cralt.

Educated in the township schools, he remained on his father's farm until 1887 he became associated with the Union Supply Company in Westmoreland county. In 1892, he returned to the farm, staying until 1902, when he come to Uniontown and opened the Craft Hardware store, later erecting the Craft building now the property of Louclcs Hardware Company. In 1930, he retired from active business and returned to the farm. On May 31, 1875, Mr. Craft was married to Miss Rebecca daughter of the late Stephen R.

and Sarah Nutt, who preceded him in death 53 years later on August 10, 1928. He leaves three children, Paul K. Craft, Luray V. Jeffries and S. Colvin Craft, all of Uniontown; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.

The body was taken to the S. Colvin Craft home at 345 West Berkeley street where the funeral service will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be made in Redstone Cemetery near Brownsville. MRS. LAURA HIXSON DIES FROM EFFECTS OF HIP FRACTURE Special to The Courier.

GREENSBUKG, Sept. the result of a fractured hip she received nine weeks ago, Mrs. Laura Hixson, 77 years, four months and 14 days old, widow Noah Hixon of Scottdale, died at 11:10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Truxal at 110 Talbot avenue, Greensburg.

Mrs. Hixson, who had resided in Scottdale tor 40 years before coming to Greensburg three years ago after the death of her husband, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunker at Hunker, and a brother, Wilson Hays of Ruftsdale. The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Truxal home in charge of Rev. M.

M. Allbeck, pastor of the Scottdale Lutheran Church of which she was a member, and Rev. M. J. Brougher, pastor of the Scottdale Church oJt the Brethren.
